The 10 Restaurants That Defined New York Dining in 2023

By

We asked our contributors to the Resy Hit List to share their top dining experiences in their cities this year — 10 restaurants that are helping to define the state of great dining right now. Please welcome back our Best of The Hit List for 2023. (You can find other cities’ top picks here.)

This was the year when dining in New York City felt, more or less, normal, again. And by normal, we mean collectively learning the rhythms of scheduling Resy Notifies to try to get that one table you’ve been wanting to get. It meant the return of more late-night dining, and breakfast and lunch service. It meant heading into the city, as Manhattan rallied itself this year with some commute-worthy spots. And it meant the appearance of some of the best dishes in the city that we’ve had in a long time: Refreshing (and fortifying) cold noodle soup over at Moono. Bright honeynut piri piri salad from Tatiana. Elegant, paper-thin slices of octopus drizzled in olive oil and citrus from Txikito. Abundant platters of housemade tofu, sausages, and grilled offal, best devoured on a Chinatown sidewalk over at Mắm.

It also meant our lives were defined by one or the other of two dominant themes in dining out today: unchecked maximalist pleasure, in which it’s all about the vibes and the extremes; or, subtle, minimalist effortlessness, in which everything just falls into place as if by magic. Both of those themes find themselves in the restaurants on this list; our top pick manages to do both.

With that, here’s a look at our most memorable New York dining experiences of 2023, and here’s to many more in the year ahead.
