Where do chefs and restaurateurs go and, more importantly, where do they love to eat? In Resy Regulars, we ask Resy chefs and industry folks to tell us where they’re regulars.
Eating alone at a restaurant is one of life’s great pleasures — whether you’re dining with a book or simply enjoying the people-watching hustle of the bar. For Alex Stupak, the chef behind restaurants like Empellón, Empellón Taqueria, Empellón Al Pastor, and The Manner Hotel’s The Otter and Sloane’s, it’s a rare joy that came to him later in life.
“Eating a meal alone in this city is definitely an oasis. It’s one of my favorite things — not that I don’t enjoy the company of my family or others,” he laughs. After becoming a father, his schedule changed, and he no longer had the typical chef schedule of staying out late and waking up at noon and eating his first meal of the day with his kitchen staff. Now, there’s more time for leisurely lunches and even breakfasts, which means more time to enjoy his own company.
His list of the best spots to eat alone share many of the same characteristics: great bar seating, a seriously good burger, and a legacy of service.
“I get it. Everyone wants to run to the hot new restaurant that has the perpetual line around the block,” Stupak says. “I’m much more interested in the neighborhood restaurant, the place that shows human touch and care for each and every customer. Those are the places that I go back to. If they’ve been around for a long time, it’s probably because that’s how they operate.”
Without further ado, here are Stupak’s six favorite places to enjoy a meal alone in New York City, in his own words.
