The Los Angeles Restaurants We Loved in July

By

If there’s one thing you must know about the people who work at Resy, it’s that we genuinely love restaurants …

This month, we fell in love with “mochiko crust” pizza, fawned over a bread basket, stepped into L.A.’s most see-or-be-seen hotel, and can’t stop thinking about not one but two scallop dishes.

My problem with…

Mírate is that it’s not outside my house. Other than that, no notes. The space is gorgeous, with an indoor-outdoor vibe, a massive tree with string lights, and a unique layout with different rooms (or sections) that offers an intimate feel in this behemoth of a restaurant. The cochinita pibil and carne asada are standouts, but what really makes this an experience is Max Reis’ well thought-out cocktail program that emphasizes sustainable spirits from various states in Mexico. It’s no wonder Mírate landed itself on North America’s 50 Best Bars. Last thing: Get the mezcal flight. Trust me.

Every time I step into…

Yangban, it feels like I get a chance to experience the incremental changes that keep elevating this modern Korean restaurant. And I was excited for Yangban’s new chapter after it had a major makeover last year.

On a recent weeknight, the place was completely packed and so lively! It’s such a fun vibe and perfect for a group dinner. Chefs-partners Katianna Hong and John Hong are amazing in the way they’re pros at their craft and know how to surprise diners. I can’t stop thinking about their golden Hokkaido scallop toast and sujebi dumplings (a dish with even more scallops in a brown butter sauce).

If you’re not sure where to grab dinner on the Westside…

Superba Food + Bread in Venice is an excellent choice. I used to think of Superba exclusively as a brunch and morning pastry spot, but I recently went for dinner, and damn, was it memorable.

Start with the picturesque bread basket featuring grilled levain covered in an absurd amount of really good butter and chives, poppy seed baguette, and polenta levain with a slightly sweet corn flavor. I can’t wait to go back for the super-fresh oysters, local halibut with peas and mushrooms, gooey fontina-and-potato croquettes, and tiramisu profiteroles.

I had to see what all the fuss was about…

… at Leopardo, Josh Skenes’ return to L.A. following the shuttering of Angler. He’s back doing what he does best, which is taking wild and foraged ingredients and presenting them in beautiful, unexpected ways. You should get some of his cheffier dishes, to be sure, but the real fun lies in the pizza menu (I dug the long-fermented “mochiko” crust), and the housemade soft serve with his twist on a Biscoff cookie, too

This place is just too good…

Food aside (for a moment), the service at Camphor is top tier; attentive would be an understatement. They have a chef’s counter, where you can watch chefs Max Boonthanakit, Lijo George, and team put together some of the best dishes L.A. has to offer.

I came with my eyes set on the burger (which was phenomenal), but the onion tartine — think a deconstructed French onion soup — was the perfect start. Now, I’m a sworn seafood hater, but my friend and our server nudged me towards the scallop demi lune, a must-have, and a day hasn’t gone by where I haven’t thought about it. Dare I say, my favorite bite of 2024 thus far.

GO-spi to…

Ospi! Welcome to Italian food on the Westside. Think a beautiful, airy, naturally-lit space that’s nearly eclipsed once the food and drinks come out. On our first visit, we ordered the spicy rigatoni, the butter chicken, and two (yes, two) margherita pizzas, and now, our nine-month-old daughter loves pizza. Be sure to ask the bar about their amaro options (obviously, not for the baby).

In fittingly discreet fashion…

Chateau Marmont, one of L.A.’s most iconic (and infamous) hotels, previously all but off-limits to non-guests, recently opened to the public for brunch and lunch.

Just walking through the storied lobby feels like a treat; but the real gift is the gorgeous interior courtyard where you’ll be seated. With soaring vaulted ceilings, sumptuous tropical foliage, and a who’s who-type crowd (and those trying to figure out who is who), the vibe here is appropriately louche. Expect a classic hotel menu: eggs Benny, shrimp cocktail, a Caesar salad — though are you really here for the food? Perhaps the nicest part of a midday meal here is the languid pace — staff is attentive but won’t rush you, so you can linger in your Hollywood fantasy for a good long while.
