Growing up in the north of England set the culinary bar fairly low for David, who originally trained to be a cardiologist before pivoting to writing about restaurants after a fateful viewing of “The Devil Wears Prada.” Since then, he’s written a couple of books about food (one about London, the other about, um, sandwiches) while covering editorial at Resy for several cities and indulging his personal obsession with old and classic restaurants.

  • Favorite food movie
It’s a toss-up between “La Grande Maison Paris” and “Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs.”

I enjoy chasing my high-end meals with a Red Bull on the subway ride home.
  • Drink of choice
    A perfect Manhattan.
  • Favorite food city
    Penang.
  • Last meal on earth
My dad’s home cooking. I’d probably request every dish he’s ever made, but highlights would include his pork curry with fermented bamboo shoots; a bowl of mohinga on the go at all times; and his eggplant curry with perfect hsi pyan and tiny dried shrimp.
