Chicago’s Best Late Night Restaurants, According to the Pros

By

Especially at this time of year, nothing is better than a satisfying late night meal after a big day. And no one knows the Chicago nightowl dining spots better than industry folks, many who rely on diners, bars, and other late night haunts after a long shift at their own restaurant. So, we surveyed a few of Chicago’s finest restaurant professionals to hear all about the places they love to eat during the late night hours, from Superdawg Drive-In to San Soo Gab San, and plenty in-between. Right this way.

Superdawg Drive-In. They’re open late, fairly priced, and the staff are always incredibly warm and welcoming to everyone. They put out a lot of great drive-thru fare like burgers, fries, and malt shakes, but their version of a Chicago hot dog, the Superdawg, is an unmatched experience. Just another instance of Chicagoans taking a lot of pride in what they do and doing it really well. Zachary Engel, Galit
As far as late night/post-work eats, anywhere in Chinatown is at the top of that list. If we can get out early enough on the weekends: Korean BBQ at San Soo Gab San.

Scofflaw in Logan Square is always a reliable late night dining spot for a bite and a beer. I have a personal soft spot for 312 Fish Market — the guys there always have a beautiful selection of fish available.
Nathan Kim, Obélix
Beck’s for the best wings in town! Doug Psaltis, Asador Bastian
I have a few late night go-tos. If I have time, I like a late drink and bite at Gibsons Bar. They make a great burger, a great salad, and a great martini. Gibsons serves until midnight, which makes this an ideal post-work date night with my husband, Jaime.

If we have a group or friends in from out of town, we like to go to the following after work: San Soo Gab San is a Chicago institution. It’s one of the only Korean barbecue spots that’s been grandfathered in to have real charcoal grills at the table. It’s excellent charcoal Korean BBQ and been open for more than 30 years. Pequod’s serves killer deep dish and is the perfect spot for out-of-towners looking to grab a late-night slice.

My favorite late night place is Diner Grill! Open 24/7 and down the street from me. Easily the best diner in Chicago. Sam Parrie, Milk Room
Red Hot Ranch! It’s open through midnight and is a great no casual no frills option. It always hits the spot — whether you call ahead to pick up and enjoy at home or wait until in line with the mixed bag of diners. Double cheeseburger and fries is my move. Andrés Clavero, Galit
Honky Tonk BBQ on 18th Street — and make sure you don’t miss the live music. Jared Rouben, Moody Tongue
Chef’s Special has been a favorite of late. They have great food and their cocktails are remarkable! Raul Jaimes, Cherry Circle Room
