This subterranean hideaway from a Little Bar alum (Chris Covey) couldn’t be cooler. Located beneath the Walker Hotel Tribeca, Saint Tuesday serves up both classic and inventive cocktails done right (including some made with rare specialty spirits) and live jazz nightly in an atmosphere that seems to channel both Left Bank Paris and speakeasy-era Manhattan.

You might think you’re on the Boulevard Saint-Germain instead of Canal Street when you step into this sleek French-style wine bar and restaurant from Jon Neidich (The Nines, Le Crocodile). The wines are natural, the food is simple but winningly French, and the café tables are pure Paris.

You’ll want to party like it’s Carnival time in Trinidad at this Lower East Side rum bar and restaurant, with its tropical flair, its Caribbean menu (jerk shrimp or chicken, patties, oxtail), and its Las’ Rum Punch and other dangerously delicious cocktails.

You’ve got to love a place that serves sea bass crudo for brunch, has a menu of “day drinks,” and warns coffee lovers that there’s “NO DECAF.” This jaunty Lower East Side bistro has its own sense of style, and that’s why it’s flourishing.

Add this to your list of vegan essentials. Andrew Segal and Steven Bellamy made their mark with L.A.’s Little Pine, then opened the first Belse in Dallas before launching this sprawling Bowery tribute to plant-based dining (from vegan sushi to Impossible Burgers) and drinking (including a range of vegan beers brewed on site).

The vibe is from the 1920s, but the music is from the 1980s at this underground speakeasy — complete with disco-ball lights, mirrored walls, and candelabras, located one flight below Saint (the rebranded Brasserie Saint Marc).

You’ve never sipped an absinthe in a place like this before — a hidden Versailles-themed speakeasy beneath Chez Moi in Brooklyn Heights (you actually get inside through a fake bookshelf) in a vaulted brick-framed underground lair that was once part of an abandoned 19th-century subway tunnel.

Named for Singapore’s English-based patois, this stylish second-floor watering hole pays tribute to Singaporean cocktail culture with an array of vividly original libations and some creative and delicious bar bites you probably haven’t seen anywhere else.

Seafood Extravaganza

This savvy import from the West Coast to the West Village features sustainable seafood and natural wines. Here, chef Brian Bornemann and artist Leena Culhane of Crudo e Nudo in Santa Monica, Calif. take over the same space that’s Breakfast by Salt’s Cure (also from L.A.) earlier in the day. Pro tip: Do try to stop by for the daily happy hour from 5 to 6 p.m. and get the daily crudo special.

Celebrity sushi master Daisuke Nakazawa and Hitoshi “Jin” Fujita are the serious talent behind this tiny brick-lined jewel of an izakaya and sashimi bar. Seafood is obviously front and center, but don’t miss the Japanese-style fried chicken.

This massive temple to fresh Greek seafood and specialties occupies the bottom three levels of what was once known as the historic Time/Life building near Rockefeller Center, and the food impresses as much as the spacious environs. Freshly caught whole fish are on abundant display, and you shouldn’t leave without at least one order of the Avra chips: paper-thin slices of fried zucchini and eggplant elegantly layered together atop a crisp white plate.

There are only 11 seats at Tim Lin’s off-the-wall minimalist sushi bar, but you’ll definitely want to grab one. The fish is impeccable and the omakase menus are a relative bargain — but best of all, Lin has fun with sushi tradition. The best evidence? His signature “Big Mac” — toro two ways, two kinds of uni, and a wisp of wagyu beef in a crisp nori wrapping.

Global Flavors

Why should you go here? Because the Lebanese food here is impeccable; because owner-chef Philippe Massoud makes a killer mixed grill; because the long, high, glowing dining room is one of the most beautiful in town. And so much more.

This NoLita gem is unique — a specialist in the Chinese-accented Thai cuisine of Phuket, courtesy of restaurateur Erika Chou and Bangkok-born chef Tom Naumsuwan, also both behind Wayla. Pro tip: Don’t miss the house favorite yum hoi (tempura scallops with frisée, sea beans, and chiles).

Any Italian will tell you that nobody makes pasta “like nonna,” and at this cozy Murray Hill trattoria, about 20 kinds of pasta per day are lovingly handmade by the real Nonna Dora — octogenarian Addolorata Marzovilla — who used to do the same for the dearly departed I Trulli.

Contemporary Israeli cuisine is hot right now, and this Greenwich Village beauty from chef Eyal Shani (HaSalon, Miznon) is as sizzling as they come. The offbeat dish names on the ever-changing menu (“Pyrex tray served stormy stracciatella lasagna”) will bring a smile to your face, and you’ll keep on smiling when you dig in.

Gugu Room is an intimate Lower East Side culinary hideaway with a share-worthy menu combining Japanese and Filipino fare (think gyoza-wrapped tacos) and a cocktail list infused with tropical fruit and Asian herbs.

This urbane Lower East Side Indian place is drawing a loyal clientele with its vegetable-forward menu of shareable plates and its come-as-you-are atmosphere. Pro tip: If it’s available, you won’t want to miss the house special of whole tandoori pomfret, a delicious white-fleshed fish from the Indian Ocean.

This one was worth waiting for: part two of the remake of the old Del Posto space (part one was the wood-oven pizzeria Mel’s), with that onetime four-star Italian destination’s executive chef, Melissa Rodriguez, in charge of the kitchen. The place looks different, but is no less elegant, and the food is better than ever.

Everything’s blue at this family-run neighborhood favorite in Park Slope — with the exception of the brightly colored contemporary Oaxacan fare, full of earthy flavor. Don’t miss the tlayuda, and definitely order yourself a Oaxacan Negroni, made with mezcal and homemade mole bitters.

For more than 40 years, Ipanema was the place to go in Midtown’s Little Brazil. Reborn 10 blocks south of its original location, it’s now in a bright contemporary setting with a new menu that includes longtime classics and exciting new takes on Brazilian cuisine. Better yet, it’s all just as good as ever.

This Williamsburg Italian hotspot has made its mark with a celebrity-magnet reputation and traditional Roman cuisine (the spaghetti cacio e pepe is a longtime house favorite) — it’s just what you’d expect from a restaurant whose still-thriving original opened in Rome in 1922.

Jacopo Giustiniani — whose group is behind Sant Ambroeus, Casa Lever, and a collection of other Felice outposts around the city — knows just what FiDi needs: a cheerful, handsome Italian restaurant serving breakfast to get the day started, a fixed-price 45-minute lunch for time-pressed traders, and a leisurely dinner to celebrate the joys, or ease the sorrows of the day.

Talk about an instant classic: Third-generation Italian-American chef Joe Isidori (Black Tap) draws on family traditions at his intimate old-school West Village restaurant, serving just the kind of fare that made us love Italian food in the first place — home-style pasta, pizza, meatballs, chicken Parm, and more.

Exceptional Korean barbecue fare, along with inventive Korean dishes fused with Italian influences, is what you’ll find here. Think Gangnam-style sausage made with Omaha Prime short ribs.

Where Dinner is the Party

Sometimes a restaurant meal feels like a dinner party. This is a dinner party — a homey space in Fort Greene, with mismatched chairs and tableware, where you enjoy a four-course nightly repast of appropriately home-style food (think burgers, chocolate mousse). The menu changes all the time. And here’s good news: Name aside, Dinner Party is open for lunch, too.

Bring a crowd to this easy-going Williamsburg bright spot from Josh Ku of the popular Taiwanese American spot win son. The menu here is eclectic — lobster au poivre is a featured entrée — and there’s karaoke and a more casual menu after 10 p.m.
