New on Resy: Yakitori Totto, Marian’s, Genesis House, and More

Midtown Manhattan

Sushi Lab, the omakase destination atop the Sanctuary Hotel, works its magic at ground level, too, with this 30-seat offshoot featuring a 13-course tasting menu by chef Frankie Chen. Expect to be pampered with toro and A5 wagyu.

Chef Michael Lomonaco (Porter House) hits it out of the park again with this convivial, art-filled, all-American addition to the eclectic Hudson Yards restaurant scene. Expect towering burgers, impeccable steaks, and an old-fashioned chocolate sundae.

Chef Laurent Tourondel, founder of the BLT restaurants, makes it simple here: all that’s offered (officially) is an American wagyu skirt steak — perfectly prepared, of course — with fries and salad. Pro tip: tell your server you’ve heard about a “secret menu,” and a few more dishes will be revealed.

You’ll be happy to find a seat at this long, narrow Chelsea Market essential, where Duangjai (Kitty) Thammasat brings Manhattan the spicy, uncompromising home-style Thai fare she’s long been famous for in Queens.

Husband-and-wife team Felipe Donnelly and Tamy Rofe of Colonia Verde and Disco Tacos are heating things up in Gramercy with this buzzy Latin American gem in the Freehand Hotel, a revival of their beloved former West Village restaurant of the same name. “Cómodo” is Spanish for “comfortable” or “easy.” Need we say more?

It’s an ideal spot to tuck into for drinks and comforting food with French flair in Midtown East — Sutton Place to be exact — located within the same building that once housed the iconic Ford Models Agency.

Contemporary, inventive takes on classic Thai comfort food are the focus at this newest restaurant from the same group behind some of Koreatown’s most beloved spots (Her Name is Han, Take31, Yakitori Nonono). Think crab curry mac ‘n’ cheese, tom yum ramen, and a Thai ragu pasta.

Since 2003, Yakitori Totto has been the city’s standard-bearer for yakitori, mastering the art of Japanese charcoal grilled chicken in its many forms and parts. Everything is delicious, from the “oysters” to the “soft knee bones,” but definitely don’t sleep on the skewered, succulent meatballs that you can get plain, glazed, or stuffed inside shishito peppers.

Tapas at Tia Pol have been a ritual for New Yorkers since 2004, when this straightforward ode to regional Spanish cuisines first opened. Expect all the classics, from patatas bravas (aioli-laced potatoes) and croqetas de jamon (ham croquettes) to gambas al ajillo (garlicky shrimp) and tortilla espanola.

Located inside Scandinavia House, near Grand Central Station, Smorgas Chef is an unexpected retreat for delicious Scandinavian classics, from their 72-hour aquavit-cured gravlaks to the smorgasbord. Better yet, they source much of what they cook from their own 300-acre farm in the Catskills, and they’re also open for brunch on weekends.

Downtown Manhattan (Below 14th Street)

This temple to Korean culture and cuisine is many things all at once — a showroom for Genesis automobiles, a stunning event space, a beautiful bookstore, and a contemporary restaurant helmed by the Michelin-starred team of Seoul’s Onjium. It’s also one of the few — if only — restaurants in the city where you can taste Korean Royal Cuisine, with traditions dating back to the 1300s.

Award-winning chef Peter Beck, who earned a Michelin star at Tamarind, showcases regional specialties from all over India along with his own Indian-inspired innovations at this elegant Tribeca spot where the cocktails are as vividly flavored and unexpected as the food.

This high-spirited Lower East Side take on contemporary Korean dining, from the couple who ran the popular Pado in the East Village, serves a small menu of irresistible dishes, weaving Mexican, Italian, and other influences into the mix. Cheesy kimchi rice, anyone?

Cleverly chosen wines by bottle and glass (the grape) and housemade pasta and focaccia (the grain) anchor the comfort-food menu at this East Village sibling to nearby Rosella. Pro tip: finish your wine with the connoisseur-level cheese board.

Tropical cocktail lovers and fans of $1 oyster happy hours, right this way. The raw bar offerings are tantalizing — but there’s cooked food too, including mussels served “mellow,” “luscious,” or “angry.”

It started with the mithai — hand-crafted Indian confectionary sold online — but chef Surbhi Sahni (from Michelin-starred Tulsi and Devi) has grown her food company into a sweets shop and restaurant showcasing regional Indian dishes with an emphasis on vegetables.

It’s all about cocktails and retro opulence at this snazzy upscale watering hole at the Public Hotel. Chefs John Fraser (Dovetail, The Loyal) and Diego Muñoz (Lima’s famed Astrid & Gastón) create the libations with the help of master mixologist Rob Krueger, and Muñoz provides the tapas.

Time to go Hollywood: the Commissary at the Metrograph theater complex channels the studio dining rooms of Tinseltown’s glory days, with a European-accented American menu. Dress like you’re waiting to be discovered.

It’s a cozy French-inflected, New American bistro helmed by a fine dining veteran, Christian Rowan (Bouley, Le Bernardin), where you can expect comforting classics, from roasted chicken and seared scallops to striped bass and warm focaccia with caramelized onion butter.

As far as New York speakeasies go, this one is, arguably, one of the easiest to find: simply head to the back of the deli on Essex, near Rivington. Inside, you’ll find hundreds of bottles to choose from, including some wines on tap, and a menu full of Italian small plates. Pro tip: One19 also has four-course and six-course tasting menus with complementary food and wines.

Brooklyn

Meet Uruguay’s Italian-accented regional cuisine at this seductive little jewel box of a place, an offshoot of the popular Williamsburg original. Empanadas are a specialty, but don’t miss the filet mignon-based chivito completo — a Dagwood sandwich, Uruguayan style.

Score another restaurant victory for Williamsburg with this enticing izakaya serving vivid cross-cultural Nikkei fare. An abbreviated menu is offered nightly from midnight to 2 a.m. — and where else can you find crispy chicken with matcha waffles and honey sriracha for brunch?

Consider this crowd-pleasing food-truck-turned-restaurant your casual go-to source for arepas, empanadas, patacones, and all the other enticing specialties of Colombian cuisine.

The vibe here is decidedly punk rock, and the food — homestyle Vietnamese street food from chef Jimmy Tu — is always solid. Pro tip: the bánh xèo at dinner is a must.
