The Resy Guide to Splurge-Worthy Takeout in New York

By

Been eating at home a lot lately? Makes sense. After a year like this past one, perhaps you’re feeling like treating yourself, your partner, or your family to a blowout meal, without having to spend hours on your feet in the kitchen? We get it. From fried chicken heaped with caviar to a traditional Indian vegetarian spread, omakase on your sofa, and more, here are 11 fancy takeout feasts worth the splurge.

Tuscans do it better: I Sodi

Spring for a full I Sodi spread: Negronis, fried artichokes and grilled radicchio with anchovy dressing, luscious lasagna and caramelized onion-laced tagliatelle, brick Cornish hen or a whole branzino with capers, and tiramisu. Then, close your eyes and pretend you’re in Rita Sodi’s tiny Christopher St. restaurant. Your apartment might even be the same size.

Four courses, seven plates: Silver Apricot

A seasonal tasting courtesy of Simone Tong and team includes some tough choices. Scallion puffs or trout crudo? Chicken truffle dumpings or braised Washugyu brisket? Grilled steelhead trout or crispy maitake fried rice? Whatever your route, you’re in for a treat.

A very good roast chicken for two: La Mercerie

You could roast your own chicken, or you could let the French experts at La Mercerie take care of it for you. Theirs comes coated in herbs with natural jus alongside a crusty half baguette to mop it up, petit greens salad, haricot verts with shallot confit, pommes purée, and for dessert, French and local cheeses, and chocolate cake.

Comfort food, all dressed up: Momofuku Ko

Cheddar and ricotta pizza topped with shio kombu, garlic oil, Parmesan, and glistening dollops of raw Maine uni. Cold fried chicken served with housemade ranch dressing and heapings of Kaluga caviar. Roasted lobster in bisque with charred sweet potato and aged butter croissant. Only Ko could come up with these dishes.

Feast like a family: GupShup

Here’s a fun idea: Call for a traditional family dinner (vegetarian or otherwise) for your pod; or if you’re single or just two, linger over leftovers for the next few days. Black daal, butter chicken, tandoori cauliflower, garlic naan — GupShup does the classics very well.

Chef’s selection: Sushi Yasuda

Sure, it’s not the same as eating nigiri out of a sushi chef’s hand, but that doesn’t mean you should deprive yourself of omakase. Choose 12 or 18 pieces, then inform the team at Yasuda of your preferences and restrictions, and they’ll ensure a stellar sushi experience to enjoy right in your living room.

Plush pork belly: Jeju Noodle Bar

If you’ve been to chef Douglas Kim’s Michelin-starred ramyun bar, you know there’s much more to Jeju than noodles. For those looking to level up, the pork belly bo ssam packages come with 15 or 30 ounces of meat; fixings of romesco, ssam sauce, pickles, and lettuces; and a bottle of Golden Barley soju with a shot glass.

Seafood spectacle: The Fulton

Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s South Street Seaport boîte takes seafood seriously. At home, that translates to platters of fresh sashimi and hand-crafted crudo, Maine lobster with longevity noodles, or an indulgent fried feast. Be sure to grab a cookie box for dessert.

A European affair: Gabriel Kreuther

You likely haven’t been enjoying Alsatian country pâté, duck leg confit, or homemade porcini gnocchetti at home, but you could be. Kreuther’s finesse-driven kitchen makes chocolate truffles and cheesecake macarons, too. If you really want to go all out, scroll down and inquire about his Choucroute Royale — Alsace’s salve for winter blues.

Marbled meat: 4 Charles Prime Rib

Splurgy cuts of beef are the specialty of the house, and if you’re ordering in from 4 Charles, you may as well add a cheeseburger or French dip to split. Sides range from truffle mac & cheese to buttery mashed potatoes. Dessert is chocolate cream pie. And the best part? You don’t need to change out of sweatpants.

The finer things: Jeffrey’s Grocery

Maybe you have something to celebrate, maybe you don’t. Either way, shrimp cocktail + Krug Grande Cuvée = guaranteed satisfaction. Not so into prawns? Opt for oysters and Bar Sardine (RIP) burgers for a killer combo of kits.
