Roberta’s, Ras Plant Based, Kindred, I Sodi, and More: New on the At Home Hit List

Roberta’s is offering reservations. Yep, you heard that right. In a rare occurrence along 12 years of glorious, grungy history, you can now reserve a table via Resy in their tiki garden. While there are plenty of right ways to order, here’s one winning equation: stracciatella and/or ‘nduja with their grilled bread; the baby romaine salad; the bucatini cacio e pepe; and of course the Bee Sting pizza, its toppings of spicy honey and soppressata now widely emulated.

This new vegan Ethiopian restaurant is a killer choice for hearty, healthy fare. Although Ras opened in early March, just one week before restaurants were forced to halt dine-in operations, they quickly found their stride with to-go orders. This neighborhood natural-wine bar has rebranded as Kindred Spirits & Provisions, offering pantry staples, fresh pasta, and plenty to drink for curbside pick-up, delivery, and in-store shopping—for which you can sign up in advance, and which requires the purchase of a Union Square Green Market Box selected by Kindred’s chefs. Highlights from the shop include “adult mac & cheese” (made of cavatelli, pecorino, and fried chickpeas), Tristar strawberry jam, gold-rimmed coupes, and Champagne from Boulard et Fille. Rita Sodi’s lasagna is self-care in food form. Thankfully, her classic sugo and artichoke versions are back in rotation, along with a few simple salads, antipasti, and pasta dishes. For heading down to Christopher Street for pickup, a house-specialty Negroni to-go is in order… or maybe something even better?

Weekends in Williamsburg bring Gertie’s “summer shack,” where from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., the staff will be slinging sandwiches, vegetable dishes, ice creams, and natural wines from a to-go window for guests to take away or enjoy outside on Grand Street. Opt for a mezcal Negroni, which Gertie is calling the “Fair Fight 2020,” and your dollars will go towards Stacey Abrams’ Fair Fight foundation, which advocates for voter protections. In case you haven’t already heard, Niche Niche @ Home has been aiming for a next-level experience. Each week, a renowned duo of chef and sommelier team up on five courses, four wines, and one great cause. Past weeks have showcased talents like Ellia and Junghyun Park from Atomix. Get in on the fun by reserving your takeout meal on Resy.

The latest project from former Rebelle chef Daniel Eddy is the café and bakery that every neighborhood needs. Mornings mean fresh-baked pastries (think sourdough croissants and coffee-flavored coffee cake); BLTs and veggie banh mis are available from 11 AM ‘til sold out, and chicken dinners can be reserved seven days a week. Even if you’ve been ordering their ready-to-cook birds from Hart’s grocery store, The Fly still does the best at roasting their perfectly-seasoned chickens. And they’re back at it, on Thursdays and Fridays from 4 to 8 p.m. Walk right up or order by phone at (347) 405-5300 for both food and booze. Not only is Kings Co. Imperial dishing out their classics for delivery, including cold sesame noodles, sesame shrimp toast, and crispy garlic chicken, but they’re also selling dumplings galore online. Pick up a selection of fully cooked and frozen dumplings, xiao long bao to steam at home, bottled sauces, or an “at home dumpling-making hit” which comes with a bamboo steamer and rolling pin. Veselka has been boiling and frying pierogies since 1954, and they remain some of the city’s best. Order up a dozen in flavors like classic potato, goat cheese-and-arugula, and mushroom-sauerkraut, alongside the  coffee shop’s other classics like borscht, stuffed cabbage, and other Ukrainian staples. It all adds up to a comforting dose of old-school New York.

The James Beard Award-winning chef just launched MP Grocery, which consists of two options: “From the Garden, Etc” for weekly picks of seasonal vegetables and herbs plus a whole chicken, seafood, and fresh ricotta and “Building Your Pantry,” which includes Robbins’ favorite pantry items including Calabrian chilies, EVOO, vinegars, and Parmigiano Reggiano.
