The little Echo Park shop with the big following for egg salad and katsu sandwiches has reopened for takeout. In addition to its most famed dishes there are seasonal salads, pickles, pastries, and coffee, plus take-home jars of milk jam or pickled bamboo shoots. David Chang is very calculated in how to open his restaurants, so things are starting off with a few take-home meal kits for now, with more to come soon. The menu changes every Monday, orders must be made at least 24 hours in advance, and pickups are on Friday and Saturday. But these are the real deal: The whole smoked short rib with condiments, lettuce, Japanese potato salad and beef rice, or half a bo ssam with all the fixings, and extras like summery tomato and cucumber salad or fried potato seccca, plus select wines. We all look forward to getting back to the jazzy brunch at John Cleveland’s Baldwin Hills restaurant, but until it’s deemed safe to reopen for all involved — staff and customers — the excellent fried catfish, shrimp and grits, breakfast pizza, vegan crab cakes and more are available for takeout and delivery.

(West Hollywood and Sahm in Venice remain closed to food sales). The Jefferson Park restaurant has served the most soulful gumbo, plus Creole classics like étouffée and jambalaya, to Los Angeles for more than 50 years. Third-generation owner Ryan Legaux and his wife Jessica continue supporting the community with good vibes and great food, whether it’s feeding frontline workers and seniors or making sure the po’ boys make it to your door. Josef Centeno has weathered many storms on the downtown corner of 4th and Main, and while he’s opened Baco and Bar Ama for patio dining, his much smaller (and enclosed) Japanese-Italian bistro has pivoted to a daytime cafe and larder, with beefy quarter-pound burgers, a tsukune chicken sandwich with cheddar, grain bowls, wine, beer, and staples like a baker’s box, farm-fresh eggs and frozen cookie dough. Just because you can’t dine at this little Manhattan Beach sushi haven doesn’t mean you can’t have amazing sushi right now. Constructed for takeout, “jewelry box” bento meals are filled with fresh fish brought directly from Japan — things like fatty bluefin tuna, Hokkaido hairy crab and sea urchin, simmered scallop, blue prawn, seared ocean trout, and more. Organic fried chicken, locally sourced greens, mac and cheese, candied yams and cornbread — classic soul food as seen through a Southern California lens. Now open for Tawainese favorites like spicy shrimp wontons, thousand-layer pancakes and dan dan noodles, the Highland Park charmer has returned for takeout and (very limited) delivery. There’s also a great marketplace for things like housemade chili oil, koshikihari rice, pantry staples, and beer, wine and sake. As with sibling Pine & Crane in Silver Lake, you can order via the website for contactless pickup, there is a strict no-cash policy right now, and everyone must wear a mask and stay six feet apart from anyone else waiting for their food.
