What We Miss Most: The Los Angeles Edition

By

If you’re the way we are here at Resy, you’ve been spending the past weeks thinking every day about your favorite restaurants. What do we miss most about them? What are we most looking forward to returning to, as they begin to fully reopen for dining? Yes, there’s plenty of takeout and delivery to enjoy, groceries and wine to buy, and lots of other ways to support the restaurants we love. But nothing beats the experience of being in a restaurant, enjoying the dishes you adore.

We’ve compiled a list of favorite things about dining in Los Angeles we’re hoping to get back so soon.

  1. Breaking the outer layer of the crispy jeweled rice at Kismet.
  2. Taking in those gorgeous ocean views of Santa Monica while sipping on a cocktail at Élephante, feeling like you’re in the middle of the Mediterranean.
  3. The sweet-salty-saucy “party wings” and best garlic green beans in the city, at Night + Market Weho. And when we’re feeling particularly hungry, burning our mouths off with the spicy som tum (papaya salad) and, to cool things down, some natural wine.
  4. Because you cannot possibly go wrong with ordering any of Chef Matt Molina’s pastas at Hippo, and or by pairing them with the cedar-smoked ocean trout, topped with lentils and mushrooms à la grecque.
  5. The perfect pairing of a glass of Champagne with caviar by the ounce and, to put it all together, those homemade potato chips bathed in brown butter from pasjoli.

  6. The childhood comforts of Mei Lin’s koshihikari rice congee with housemade XO chili sauce, pork floss, and an onsen egg at Nightshade.
  7. Literally any reincarnation of Baroo so that we might have another chance to experience Kwang Uh’s magical, experimental kitchen once again.
  8. Those potato taquitos from Guerrilla Tacos.
  9. Three words: Old Man Bar. The speakeasy tucked in the back of Hatchet Hall is like a library of American whiskey.
  10. Enjoying a Hot Lips cocktail (or two or three) at The NoMad Rooftop.
  11. Feeling like you’re at home among friends and family who own the most incredible beach house in Venice at Gran Blanco.
  12. Anticipating getting our hands on the tacos de camaron from Mariscos Jalisco while we wait in line outside the truck.
  13. Creative comfort food from Majordōmo, from the bing and the bounty bowl of vegetables with savory koji mascarpone and “domojang,” to that luxe macaroni with chickpea hozon and truffles.
  14. Arguably one of the most memorable ceviches you will ever have: the concha negra (bloody clam) ceviche from La Cevicheria.
  15. Transporting yourself to Paris with the warm goat cheese salad and the rotating fresh vegetables du jour from Belle Vie.
  16. Ham Ji Park’s pork, perfected: the heat of the spicy pork ribs and the richness of the gamjatang (spicy pork neck stew).
  17. The first sip of matzo ball soup at Freedman’s.
  18. Over-ordering at dim sum with family and friends at Lunasia, and not regretting it one bit.
  19. That chocolate croissant at Konbi that more than lives up to the hype.
  20. The way Lukshon’s Hawaiian butterfish dusted in coconut snow just melts in your mouth.
