New on Resy: pasjoli, American Beauty, Yasu

The mastermind behind Michelin-starred Dialogue has unveiled his latest concept: a seasonal ode to French bistronomy. pasjoli has all the trappings of a Parisian brasserie, and chef Dave Beran puts on the pizzazz, with an antique cocktail cart wheeling in caviar, and a theatrical duck press, with sauce done tableside. Other joie de vivre-inducing highlights include the sole meunière, omelette aux truffes, and poussin farci with Champagne chicken jus.

A new Venice steakhouse, American Beauty is as handsome (read: mid-century polish, sleek horseshoe-shaped bar, vintage booths) as it is delectable. And the beauty in question is a perfectly done steak. Prime cuts are grilled over an almond wood fire—resulting in a superbly aromatic piece of meat—and the fresh seafood plates, think charred hamachi collar and ocean trout steak, go toe-to-toe with the carnivorous offerings.

A few bites into Yasu’s sensational omakase, and you’ll be hooked. The lauded sushi destination, which hails from Toronto, has opened up shop in Beverly Hills, crafting a tasting for the ages. You’re in for local preparations—from Santa Barbara spot prawns to California king salmon—alongside other Edomae-style fish flown straight out of Japan. One thing’s for sure: you’re about to experience umami like never before.

For a taste of the exclusive supper clubs of lore, look no further than Mason. Combining the sensibility of America’s classic steakhouses and the vibrancy of Santa Monica, this upscale affair will dazzle your senses. Moody and seductive, the space is aglow in vintage light fixtures, complete with tufted leather booths. As for the food, you’re in for a sampling of classics: dry-aged meats, fine seafood, pigs in a blanket, and oysters galore.

The Korean food craze shows no sign of stopping, and newcomer Haewah Dal is only igniting the flames. Tucked inside West Hollywood’s 1 Hotel, Alice is an all-day haven where the menu is brightened by produce from the hotel’s on-site garden. There are serious Italian roots imbedded in the fabric of this Hermosa Beach hot spot. Radici serves time-honored dishes that evoke loving matriarchs hard at work, a nod to the restaurant’s Pacentro heritage– a small commune lost in Abruzzo. Tucked in the heart of Los Feliz is a French bistro done with soul. Conceived by celebrated Parisian restaurateur Sarah Bessade, Loupiotte Kitchen doles out breakfast, lunch, and dinner amid a cheery ambiance. As such, expect the season’s best, from vegetables to seafood. Show-stoppers include the house-baked pastries (topped with the Morning Happiness spread) and, for dinner, creamy polenta and tuna rillettes.

Step in for a piping hot coffee in the morning, and linger with a glass of wine in the afternoon; Bar Avalon is a daytime operation that excels and calls Echo Park its home. Sun-drenched and stylishly bare-boned, this new eatery breezily whips out seasonal goodness, from collards and eggs with house-smoked bacon to the all-day Caesar with anchovied croutons.

A proper biergarten dreamt up by fifth-generation Santa Monicans, Ashland Hill makes for an ideal post-beach hang. Here, the sun-drenched outdoor patio is matched by a small brick bar, where patrons unwind with local craft beers, California wines, and a well-stocked gin cabinet. On the food side, expect the sort of crowd-pleasing bar bites that’ll keep you noshing—giant pretzels, teeming nachos, refreshing crudités—and pro-tip: bring your dogs, furry friends get their own menu and are more than welcome.

An all-day operation done superbly well, fundamental DTLA knocks it out of the park day and night. And this second location delights just as much, doling out the sort of plates a neighborhood relies on. But fundamental pushes the classics even further, matching steak tartare with black garlic aioli, cavatelli with sweet corn fondue, and house-made cornbread with slick coconut butter.

A seducing wine bar decked out in cherry-red booths and midnight blue tones, Augustine is here to stun. Beyond the cozy décor, stellar wine offerings include current finds and rare 19th century vintages (their collection dates back to the 1860s). Look no further than the chalkboard notifying sippers which unearthed bottles are available by the glass, and rest assured, you’re in good hands. Nestled inside the Portofino Hotel & Marina, the seasonal restaurant winks at its namesake, the globe-trotting baleen whale, for its seafaring menu. As such, don’t be surprised to see New England-style clam chowder and Thai green curry, or duck carnitas and pork schnitzel crowding the same table.

Santa Monica is known for its cozy haunts, and it doesn’t get any better than Margo’s. Inside, a modern mid-century aesthetic floats about (read: velvety teal banquettes and handsome wooden furnishings), while the menu is positively California. Dig into avocado toast, grilled mahi mahi fish tacos, miso-glazed black cod, lamb chops with truffle pea purée, and the bicultural croissant bread pudding–  the best way to end things on a sweet note.

A SoCal destination since 1937, Damon’s has been servicing those in-the-know with steak, seafood, and barbecue for quite some time. And it’s easy to see why Damon’s has stood the test of time once you throw in its cushy tiki vibe, welcoming service, and satisfying plates. We’re talking beer- and coconut-fried shrimp, smoked beef brisket cut paper-thin, and a pan-roasted, bone-in double pork chop, which begs to be paired with the tropically-inclined cocktails, from Damon’s famous mai tai to the rum, pineapple, and coconut-laced Chi Chi.

With honeyed wood furnishings that glow in the sun-setting hours, R10 Social House stands as one alluring gastropub. But don’t let its Redondo Beach waterfront views fool you, for the kitchen impresses just as much, with farm-to-table fare that goes above and beyond. Case in point: market oysters spruced up with watermelon mignonette, the fresh catch served in gold curry with papaya slaw, and a parade of vegetable plates, straight out of the local farmers market. Pro-tip: check out the upstairs Chesterfield Lounge for a bygone era look and feel.
