Una Pizza Napoletana

Lower Manhattan

25-year industry veteran chef Anthony Mangieri is committed to serving up truth through pizza, wherever he goes. Una Pizza Napoletana has lived many lives in various locations — most recently in Mangieri’s home state of New Jersey. But the latest chapter has returned Mangieri to the Lower East Side, where you’ll find a purposely sparse menu of perfect pies and an attention to detail rarely found in a pizzeria. From the meticulous tiling and old-school chairs with leather padding, the entire experience is deeply personal and oh-so-special.

DON’T MISS

The menu is a beautifully curated selection of puffed out pies (Neapolitan-style, of course), but you won’t regret a classic margherita, and perhaps whatever the floating pie of the day happens to be.

GupShup

Gramercy

While Bombay and New York exist on opposite sides of the world, there’s something of a love story between the two cities. Dream-like fantasies of entrepreneurialism play out in both financial capitals, and it’s this romance that owner Jimmy Rizvi celebrates at Gupshup. Colorful spins on modern Indian cuisine keep diners excited — with as much thill for vegetarians and vegans as anyone else.

A vibrant and energetic Bombay outpost in Gramercy.

DON’T MISS

The perpetual western favorite, butter chicken, can be devoured in a playful wing format. The larger format Himalayan morels are also a standout. And new on the scene is an exhilarating jackfruit curry, spiked with coconut, that evokes dreams of the northern Sri Lankan city of Jaffna.

Zou Zou’s

Upper Chelsea

Venture over to Pendry at Manhattan West, and you’ll find a former NoMad duo (chefs Madeline Sperling and Juliana Laif) presenting a bounty of Eastern Mediterranean flavors in large format, shareable plates that are just right for group revelry — any night of the week.

An elegant and charismatic haven where the hearth is the heart.

DON’T MISS

The raw fluke with a hit of peppery, garlicky z’hug is an eye-opener of a starter. And from there? Let’s just say you’ll want to brace for the impossibly flaky duck borek. This savory pastry (here glazed with orange syrup) was first devised during the Ottoman Empire. Sperling more than validates its presence on a modern-day menu.

The night doesn’t have to end when plates are cleared. Check out the newly opened cocktail lounge, Chez Zou, for a selection of after-dinner drinks.

Le Gratin

Lower Manhattan

Chef Daniel Boulud invites you into his nostalgic memories of the bouchons in his hometown of Lyon, here in a slightly tonier setting — the ground floor of the Beekman hotel, in the footprint of what used to be Augustine. Le Gratin is Boulud in hearty, rib-sticking form, and we’re here for it. 

THE VIBE

Warm, inviting; a glimpse into Lyon life on the plate, and a glimpse into downtown bustle in the scene.

DON’T MISS

It would be irresponsible not to recommend the inspiration for the restaurant – the gratin itself, which can be ordered as a standalone dish or paired with a whole or half-roasted chicken.

BY THE WAY

Each month, the Le Gratin team will showcase a quintessential French classic. Recently was Coté et Ris (veal chop with sweetbread in morel sauce), and the summer specials include grilled turbotin with garlicky artichokes, and a Thermidor-style lobster au gratin.

Jing Fong

Chinatown

There’s no greater feeling in the last couple of years than when a shuttered New York institution gets back on its feet. Jing Fong is no exception. With over 40 years of history in Chinatown, the iconic dim sum locale is open again, this time in a space that seats a modest 100 (vs. the original 800-seater).

THE VIBE

Bustling, perfect for shared meals amongst family and friends. It’s all heart and history.

DON’T MISS

Cantonese American favorites will have you summonsing the dim sum cart early and often. But not exclusively, as you can and should mix in menu items to your heart’s delight. So, perhaps the beef chow fun, followed by some lava buns? Don’t hold back.

BY THE WAY

Jing Fong put itself on the map as a destination banquet hall after the mass Chinese immigration in the 1970’s. The new, more intimate location includes special touches from the previous 25,000-square-foot behemoth that ensure the memories of weddings, galas, and Lunar New Year celebrations of years past live on.

Laser Wolf Brooklyn

Williamsburg

For the last couple of years, Philadelphia diners have been wowed by chef Michael Solomonov’s Israeli culinary magic at Laser Wolf, the sequel to his groundbreaking Zahav (even if it really was a prequel). At last, Solomonov has answered the sirens of New York and fired up the charcoal grill atop the roof of the trendy Hoxton Hotel in Williamsburg. Bold flavors are seared into every skewer.

THE VIBE

A rooftop Mediterranean aesthetic with uninterrupted Manhattan skyline views.

DON’T MISS

Sharing strategy comes into play when selecting from the grill menu, but it’s best to sample a mix of meat, fish, and vegetables. A lamb and beef koobideh plus a shawarma-spice cauliflower sounds nice. Whatever the choice, a full salatim spread is your entry into the Solomonov form of dining.

The cooking at Laser Wolf was inspired by Solomonov’s love of Tel Aviv’s ‘shipudiya’ (skewer house) culture.

The latest venture from Pickle Hospitality (of Jacob’s Pickles fame) bills itself as a “personal slice of paradise,” one that channels the relaxing rum-filled vacations you aren’t taking enough of. Consider the assortment of tropical cocktails in their festive vessels your summer homework.

You’re on Island Time now.

CAN’T MISS

In the spirit of true tiki fashion, you’ll find classics like the mai tai and the Singapore Sling as well as new concoctions (and an extensive rum list). Soak everything up with a savory on-theme sandwich — spam and cheese, anyone?

If you opt for a brunch visit, enjoy any of the sandwiches in between the bookends of freshly made donuts.

Stissing House

Pine Plains

When the existing restaurant on a historic Hudson Valley property closed, esteemed chef Clare de Boer (King) jumped at the opportunity. Drawing inspiration from the simplicity of Shaker-style cooking, de Boer leans heavily into wood-fire cooking to provide stellar results, reminiscent of her simple-but-perfect dishes at King — which is why a dish like “wood-fired bread with asparagus and goat’s curd” barely hints at its depths of flavor when you read it on the page. The onetime tavern attracts visitors far and wide, but is meant to make locals proud.

THE VIBE

A worn-in historical landmark invigorated with new life.

DON’T MISS

Treat yourself with rustic items like carved spiral ham. The “martini style” pheasant with juniper is made for two and intense with herbaceous flavor.

BY THE WAY

The Stissing House has served as a Dutchess County watering hole since 1782. It’s not often you’ll get to visit the site of America’s first domed ballroom.
