Momofuku Seiōbo, Sharon Kwan Kitchen, Bad Hombres, and More: New on the Resy Hit List

Prince of York offers something we definitely want more of right now: laughs. Its Happy Endings comedy nights kick off every Wednesday at 7.30 p.m. That said, chef Sam Bull’s menu is no joke: his signature dishes (Iraqi chicken with garlic sauce, spaghetti crab in a bag) continue to have a strong following. Feeling tapped out by the weekend? Book in for Saturday’s “Good Times Long Lunch” for a menu that includes oysters with Bloody Mary granita and other serves of boozy fun.

Sharon Kwan’s hospitality career unofficially started at age six, when she washed dishes at her grandparents’ market noodle stall in Malaysia. Her memories of growing up in Petaling Jaya certainly influence her flagship restaurant. As the venue’s Instagram promises, there’s zero compromise on any of their dishes, whether it’s the woo tau koh (yam cake), har mee (prawn noodle soup), or the signature ayam bakar (flame-grilled chicken). It’s been named Restaurant of the Year (twice!) and is one of Sydney’s top dining destinations. Like David Chang’s other venues worldwide, though, it closed in March. Its recent reopening – for two tasting menu seatings every Wednesday to Saturday night – is an excellent development for Sydney diners. Paul Carmichael’s brilliant past menus tapped into his Carribean upbringing (like his twist on cou cou – the national dish of Barbados, where he grew up), but expect some changes with this new COVID-adapted Seiōbo incarnation.

Rotolo with beef cheek, stracciatella, cavalo nero, and horseradish. Agnolotti with duck broth and truffles. Jerusalem artichoke ravioli with honey and chilli oil. Scott McComas-Williams’s mastery of pasta is a given — and wheat-avoiding diners can still enjoy his menu with a glass of Radikon, because the chef recently spent three months perfecting a gluten-free pasta. (Another COVID hobby pays off.) Ragazzi is open for bookings and walkins from 11.30 a.m to 11.30 p.m. during the week. But you can also stop by on Saturdays from midday, and its Avventura! Sunday Lunch series launches in August.

Six years ago, Ravi Prasad and his wife Della converted their living room into Parliament On King, a refugee-run cafe. Its catering wing helped asylum seekers earn above-award wages, too – until the pandemic hit and bookings got cancelled. So on Friday and Saturday nights, Parliament trades as a pop-up soup kitchen. A Ugandan-born chef might make African-inspired vegetable soup, while a worker from Myanmar offers Burmese salmon stew – they’re free if you’re hard up, or $5 each if you can. Details here.

After its short (and queue-attracting) stint as a pop-up bakery and pick-up hub for seriously good take-home lasagne, Sixpenny has shifted back into fine-dining mode. You can still get your pastry fix, of course (the St. Honoré tart will be served with Manjimup black truffle until winter’s end), but the three-hatted restaurant also offers barbecued bonito with persimmon and turnip and other well-executed dishes. Plan ahead if you want to visit – Sixpenny has tended to book out three months in advance.

Bad Hombres began as a vegan Mexican restaurant under chef Toby Wilson (Ghostboy Cantina). When Juan Carlos Miranda took over, he drew on his Peruvian roots and added dishes like a plant-based lomo saltado. The stir-fried dish of potato chips (yes, a stir-fry of fries) is traditionally made with wok-fried beef, but he uses oyster mushrooms instead. Also on the menu: tacos filled with pastor-style mushrooms, cauliflower “chorizo,” or miso eggplant. Open Tuesday to Sunday for takeaway, or reserve for its set-menu dinner.

This King Street cafe is fully vegan, too. Here, the menu is inspired by owner Sarah Shaweesh’s Palestinian heritage. At Khamsa, she reimagines musakhan (a slow-cooked chicken dish that translates as “heated up” in Arabic) with mushrooms flavoured with sumac and onions instead. She recently started serving dinner, offering Palestinian dumplings, traditional tomato-stewed beans, and more. She also takes her vegan knafeh seriously: She got her old schoolmates from Jordan to approve Khamsa’s version. Open daily, walk-ins only. Details here.

This all-day diner offers a range of Asian and Asian-adjacent dishes that are heavy on the carbs and comfort factor. Think food you’d want to eat in your PJs or sweat pants: fries loaded with Singaporean chilli crab or Peking duck, cheeseburger spring rolls, pork belly served in roti tacos. If you’re up for a calorie blowout, the desserts will offer what you need – like French toast “bites” smothered in Nutella fudge sauce. Open daily 9 a.m. to 9.30 p.m. for walk-in diners. Caviar for breakfast? That’s what this upscale new cafe is offering. Co-owner Kevin Ly (Brewristas) has called on chef Jihwan Choi (formerly of Momofuku Seiōbo) to create a glitzy menu that also includes ocean trout gravlax, a truffle-rich croque-monsieur and a signature lobster roll that also comes with a good dose of, yes, caviar. Not a fan of queuing for brunch? Good news: this cafe – housed in an Art Deco former florist’s shop – takes bookings. Open 7 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. daily.
