Located in the heart of Manhattan, Herald Square is best known for the Empire State Building and the collection of chain clothing stores that surrounds it. With Penn Station to the west, the garment district to the north, Koreatown to the east, and NoMad to the south, Herald Square gets a lot of foot traffic, for sure, but when it comes to dining, it used to be pretty dire: fast food staples (Sbarros!), ho-hum delis, and pubs keen on accommodating the happy hour crowd coming from nearby office buildings.
But the area’s restaurant and bar landscape has been growing and changing as exciting new venues continue to make it a surprising food-and-drink destination. From Asian kitchens to a speakeasy with live music to an award-winning cookie worth falling in line for, here’s where to eat the next time you find yourself in Herald Square.
