New on Resy: Besharam, Osito, Birch & Rye, and More

At her deeply personal Dogpatch place, chef-owner Heena Patel offers a menu of vibrant, immensely varied specialties from her home state of Gujarat, inspired by her childhood memories and family recipes. A selection of housemade chutneys and pickles amps up the flavors even more.

Here’s an elegant fixed-price tasting-menu restaurant that really stands out from the rest: Chef-owner Seth Stowaway (Bar Agricole, Trou Normand) cooks every one of the 20-plus nightly offerings with a wood-burning oven and hearth — no burners, no induction cooktops. Look for hyper-local, hyper-seasonal produce turned into spectacular food.

Longtime San Francisco cook Anya El-Wattar takes a deep dive into the rich culinary culture of her native Russia at her intimate Noe Valley restaurant — but reinterprets the classics with a contemporary touch (the stuffed cabbage is made with Wagyu beef and the cabbage is grill-charred).

A winning combination: a cool vacation-on-the-Pacific vibe, a serious cocktail menu with tropical inflections, a seafood-focused Nikkei menu (tiraditos, ceviches, crudos, sushi, and more), and knockout views of the SoMa skyline and beyond.

This isn’t your typical Italian place, and that’s why it’s special. Seating is divided between high-tops, bar seats, regular tables, and a communal set-up looking into the kitchen. Instead of the usual clichés, the menu focuses on numerous varieties of crudo and superb housemade pasta, which might include uncommon shapes like casoncelli and triangoli.

Buddy is the kind of neighborhood bar every neighborhood could use: The room is friendly, the wines are natural, the cocktails are stellar (and all based on wine or vermouth), and the snacks are just what you’ll want — maybe most of all the signature crispy mortadella “sammy” with cherry peppers and Dijonnaise.

Shuggie’s stands out brightly in more ways than one: This popular pizzeria and wine bar is riotously colorful — think hot yellow and Kelly green — and does its part to combat food waste by using “upcycled” ingredients (squash scraps, wilted greens, chicken gizzards) in its snacks, shareables, and not-to-be-missed grandma-style “trash pie” pizzas.

This Lower Haight omakase destination is making waves. The door is unmarked, and once you find your way inside, you’ll see that there are only six seats at the sushi bar — period. The sushi, though, is fabulous.

This garlic-centric Columbus Avenue icon has been perfuming the air and delighting local palates for three decades. Now serving its well-garlicked salads, sandwiches, pastas, pizzas, and entrées just down the street from its original location, it’s as good as ever. Pro tip: The signature 40-clove garlic roasted chicken is the move.

If caviar’s your thing, look no further than this elegantly casual Sausalito tasting lounge from the California Caviar Company. The menu? Caviar with classic accompaniments; a few caviar-graced chef’s creations; and plenty of Champagne and other wine — and, of course, those dollops of sturgeon roe served right on the top of your closed fist.

Robbie Wilson and Emily Perry Wilson of Bird Dog in Palo Alto know what they’re doing with this handsome Hayes Valley restaurant, drawing from both French and Japanese cuisine (the menu is long on seafood, much of it raw). A special point of pride is the high-end vintage sound system, and there’s a listening room off the bar.

This warm, wood-paneled Mission District bar is the work of chef Seth Stowaway, whose adjacent upscale tasting-menu place Osito is creating a buzz of its own. Here, the small but seductive à la carte menu is full of bright flavors inspired by Stowaway’s south Texas roots, and the cocktails look to fruits and herbs.
