It comes as no surprise that Los Angeles is more than pulling its weight when it comes to chef talent these days. As further evidence of the resiliency of the city’s dining scene, the industry took about two seconds to be abuzz about Asterid, native Angeleno Ray Garcia’s new endeavor, opening late March in the iconic Disney Concert Hall. After closing Broken Spanish, Garcia takes the stage to premiere his reinvented Modern American concept celebrating the diversity of Los Angeles cuisine.

The Vibe

A lively and approachable indoor-outdoor concept that feeds off downtown energy.

Don’t Miss

It’s still too early to tell which dishes here will be runaway stars, but there’s rumblings of a large-plate lamb shank with charred eggplant puree, as well as a version of beef tartare. 

By the way

Just because it shares a structure with a concert hall, that doesn’t mean this spot is only for the dinner-and-a-show crowd. Garcia hopes that locals quickly put Asterid in their regular rotation.

Kato Restaurant

Arts District

Once upon a time, Kato set up shop in a humble strip mall, but they since have expanded to larger digs in the growing collective of boutiques and restaurants in ROW DTLA. They fit right in. In this new, swankier location, chef Jon Yao has built an exquisite tasting menu that blends Taiwanese cuisine with Asian American nostalgia, a merger that’s racked up an ever-growing pile of accolades for this new iteration.

The vibe

A no-expense-spared tasting menu experience you’ll be thinking about for a while.

Don’t miss

The tasting menu eliminates the agony of choice, and you can expect an emphasis on seafood with inspired courses like a Santa Barbara uni donut with Ibérico ham and brown butter.

By the way

Yao takes nostalgia seriously — The name Kato is a reference to the sidekick character Bruce Lee played in the 1960s TV series “The Green Hornet.”

Margot

Culver City

As it turns out, you can grab a taste of the Mediterranean without leaving Culver City. Whether indoors or outdoors, the vistas at Margot make for an extremely elegant dining experience. The Spanish and Italian coastal-inspired menu keeps the culinary travelogue going and the team behind the design left no stone (or in the case of Margot, boulder) unturned when it comes to unlocking the proper ambiance.

The vibe

An elegant stand-in for the Mediterranean coast, but with 360-degree views of L.A. 

Don’t miss

The pan con tomate is simple yet transportive, and makes a great first bite. Same goes for the hamachi crudo. The rigatoni with house-cured pancetta is a newer addition to the menu and delivers instant gratification.

By the way

It should be no surprise that you should make it a priority to catch the roof deck at sundown.

Everson Royce Bar

Arts District

It’s important to have someone to turn to in your happy hour of need, and ERB is that someone. Locals and visitors alike can clink specialty cocktails inside or catch up with friends outside on the twinkling patio. This Arts District watering hole offers features an impressive wine program — co-owner Randy Clement also co-founded Silver Lake Wine — and a Tex-Mex-inspired bar menu you’ll be excited about.

The vibe

Worth flocking to. The cocktails are made with top notch spirits … and a whole lot of personality. 

Don’t miss

Cocktails pull inspiration from local produce, like the mezcal and grapefruit Yo La Tengo. As for the bar bites, the smoky potato taquitos and grilled pork chorizo burger have been described as “perfectly executed.”

The team just launched a new Taquito and Taco Tuesday menu, which is sure to include specimens of both worth sampling.

Sushi Tama

Beverly Hills

Under the trusted and watchful eye of chef Hideyuki Yoshimoto, you can work your way through some of the freshest seafood WeHo (and L.A., and therefore America) has to offer. The dining room is awash in light woods and pinks, with a menu that boasts quality sushi and kaisendon — sashimi over rice — dishes at a price that feels like a gift in this part of town.

The vibe

An intimate sushi restaurant that focuses on counter service.

Treat yourself to the pinnacle of gracious hospitality as the experts on staff carefully curate and present a fleet of colorful nigiri offerings.

On the off-chance you were worried about Yoshimoto’s street cred, a reminder he honed his craft at the iconic Tsukiji Fish market in Tokyo. L.A. is lucky to have him.

Beverly Hills

Forty years ago, when his restaurant empire was just a twinkle in Wolfgang Puck’s eye, Spago arrived — and the concept of Californian cuisine took off. Its ability to attract diners (and the ritzy elite) over the last four decades is something to celebrate. The L.A. flagship currently is located in Beverly Hills, having endured the full gauntlet of relocations and revamps, all the while serving up stellar seasonal small plates at an exceptional level of service.

The vibe

It will feel like your table is at the end of a red carpet — whether or not you starred in the latest blockbuster. 

Don’t miss

The spicy tuna tartare in sesame miso cones have made it all the way from the beginning. Same goes with the smoked salmon pizza. The tenure of these dishes lends to their credibility. And of course, there’s always Puck’s signature Austrian veal weinerschnitzel.

Mother Wolf

Hollywood

Coming off the monster hit that is Venice trattoria Felix, chef Evan Funke is at it again. This time, he’s putting his stamp on Roman cuisine at Mother Wolf. With laser focus on Italy’s Eternal City, diners are shepherded through the doors of Hollywood’s historic Citizen-News building into a glamorous dining space, outfitted head-to-toe in bold colors and antique accents.

The vibe

You might think you have stumbled into a grandiose Roman dinner party of a different era.

Don’t miss

The crispy artichokes are a mandatory start. From the pasta perspective, you should feast on the painstakingly perfected cacio e pepe. For what it’s worth, Funke is also particularly excited about his grilled lamb chops — as are we.

Don’t lose sight of the amaro cart that’s tucked around the corner. No dinner party is complete without a nightcap.
