It’s a neighborhood pub with a difference, from the same team that brought you Aster Hall, Au Cheval, and Trivoli Tavern. Expect a softly lit, 1920’s London atmosphere, a menu ranging from steaks to curries, a connoisseur’s wine list, and a world-class bar built around a vintage Italian espresso machine.

The name means “thirst” in French which is ironic, considering this stylish, semi-secret Parisian-style bar à vin downstairs on Logan Square offers roughly 50 wines, both classic and natural, and many by the glass. The glowing, antique-filled bistro interior is intoxicating in itself.

At this unconventional Humboldt Park trattoria, chef Matt Troost (Three Aces, Charlatan) reworks pasta classics — think “freestyle” lasagna with mushroom Bolognese — and uses a garden’s worth of herbs in unexpected ways. Don’t miss pairing your pasta with Il Serpente, a custom pilsner made in collaboration with Segnatore’s neighbor, Pilot Project Brewing, which is located just down the street.

Find your way to this 1903-vintage architectural gem for a dining experience you won’t forget: elevated comfort food by chef Brian Huston (Public, Evanston’s Boltwood) served in one of Chicago’s most beautiful dining rooms — the spacious, light-filled Atrium. Or enjoy the same menu under the same roof in the clubby cocktail venue Theo’s or the intimate music-filled Listening Room.

Chef Chris Curren (Blue 13) and his wife, hospitality veteran Megan Curren, channel the taverns of the American colonial era at their convivial St. Charles “ordinary” (an old term for tavern). There’s nothing ordinary about the food, though. When’s the last time you had a seafood croquette with your dry-aged rib eye, or smoked grapes in your Waldorf salad?

The handcrafted beers here are something to savor. Forbidden Root specializes in producing drafts that involve imaginative flavor and ingredient combinations: think strawberry basil hefeweizen or a rye-inflected single IPA with hints of stone fruit and pineapple. Complementing the beers is a solid menu of snacks, small plates, mains, and desserts, too, including an irresistible milk-brined pork schnitzel sandwich.

Echoing its success in Washington D.C. and Denver, this vibrant self-styled “Tuscan steakhouse and spritz bar” galvanizes the Windy City with its menu of serious meat, authentic pasta, vegan-friendly offerings, and, of course, its variations on Italy’s favorite aperitivo, the spritz.

Updated martinis and cosmos, crave-worthy bar food, plush booths to sink into — savvy restaurateur/designer Adolfo Garcia (The Diver) clearly has another hit on his hands. Pro tip: come for happy hour four nights a week, when every glass of wine is $9.

There’s plenty of savor and spice to go around in this cool, minimalist dining room occupying the former premises of Opart Thai House, where chef Roongnapha (“P’Mam”) Prakobkit, a longtime veteran of the Opart kitchens, honors and sometimes rethinks the classic Thai cuisine repertoire.

You don’t have to check into Evanston’s Graduate Hotel to check out its Homestead Room, a haven for comfort food (from pigs in a blanket to hanger steak) and offbeat cocktails. Note to bar-lovers: the red leather barrel-back bar stools might be the most comfortable ones in town.

Noodles may be the focus at this sleek contemporary-style Asian spot, but they’re just the beginning: there’s also Peking duck three ways and a selection of other Chinese favorites, an array of sushi, and just to wake up your palate, a full breakfast menu, Asian and otherwise.
