New on Resy: Lulu, Horses, Cobi’s, and More

When the doyenne of California cuisine opens a new restaurant, you go. With Lulu, Alice Waters (Chez Panisse) brings her signature focus on seasonal ingredients to the Southland in a breezy, beautiful space.

It’s a restaurant with a thoroughbred pedigree: That’s an apt way to describe Horses, which sits in the same space where iconic industry hangout, Ye Coach & Horses, once stood for 73 years before closing in 2010. Chefs Liz Johnson and Will Aghajanian (Mimi, Freedman’s, The Catbird Seat) are injecting some California bistro vibes into this historic spot with endive Caesar salads, roast chicken, a must-order burger, and reinvented classic cocktails, but they’re still paying homage to its history, too.

The Cat & Fiddle is a place with a story: Founded in 1982 in Laurel Canyon by English rock bassist Kim Gardner, it later had a 29-year run on Sunset Boulevard (the likes of Rod Stewart and Robert Plant were regulars), closed for a few years, then reopened at its present site — still under Gardner family ownership. Expect unpretentious British fare — sausage rolls, shepherd’s pie, fish and chips, and traditional Sunday roast dinners.

Vanessa and Thomas Tilaka Kalb, who met working at San Francisco’s acclaimed Flour + Water, have created a veritable palace for cheese at this massive space, located inside a converted landmark 1922 Pasadena stable. Agnes is a showcase for an incredible selection of cut-to-order cheeses, and doubles as a wine and cheese shop, too.

Limestone columns, parquet floors, and real (indoor) lemon trees provide an atmospheric setting for a menu of Hellenic specialties with a focus on charcoal-grilled whole fish, much of it straight from the Mediterranean at this temple for exceptional Greek food in Beverly Hills.

Cobi’s is a celebration of Asian street food — Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Indian, and more, opened by Cobi Marsh (Cobi’s Curries) and Lance Mueller (E.P. & L.P.) on the site of Dhaba, a local favorite for Indian food for half a century. Pro tip: Score a table on the homey, greenery-framed covered outdoor patio.

This airy, light-filled bistro from Wade McElroy and Russell Malixi (Horse Thief BBQ) is one of the many reasons why you should be dining in Highland Park. The internationally themed menu has an Italian slant, featuring housemade pastas.

One of L.A.’s great culinary assets is its wealth of Korean restaurants (the city boasts the largest Korean population of anyplace outside Korea itself), and this handsome barbecue showplace does it up right. Some eight or 10 cuts of grill-your-own beef (including American and Australian wagyu) are on offer, and there’s a full range of other Korean specialties too.

Dozens of bare bulbs twinkle overhead like a constellation of stars at this warm little Long Beach oyster bar and seafood restaurant, featuring super-fresh fish landed in nearby San Pedro and such unusual offerings as seafood chowder fries and a fried oyster Caesar. Pro tip: All oysters are 50% off on Monday evenings.

Like the beach-adjacent original in Venice, this breezy all-day café inland serves fresh, brightly flavored California fare — salads, sandwiches, pasta, pizza, and more — with a hint of an Australian accent. Good news for late risers: breakfast is served daily until 3 p.m. (most definitely including avocado toast, an Aussie invention).

Here’s one you won’t want to miss: This big, colorful downtown sibling of the crazy-busy Manhattan Beach original serves an irresistible seafood-heavy menu of American fun food with an occasional Southern drawl (Big Easy gumbo, seafood jambalaya). Pro tip: Don’t miss the restaurant’s famous Navy Grog, a Rock’n Fish signature.

Don’t take too long finding your way to this bare-bones eight-stool sushi bar, overseen by Hokkaido sushi master Masasuke Shimakawa, just off the lobby at Santa Monica’s Fairmont Miramar Hotel.

It’s game(s) on at this two-level, 20,000-square-foot sports bar and restaurant, featuring more than 150 screens (including a wall-to-wall Megatron), along with wings five ways, signature dishes like pickle-brined crispy chicken fingers, and an encyclopedia’s worth of craft cocktails and brews.

In the mood for a double cheeseburger for breakfast or bacon and eggs for lunch? Superba’s got you covered, with its all-day menu served from morning to late afternoon — and the dinner menu that goes on from there is full of possibilities, too. Whatever you eat, make sure it includes some baked goods: More than 20 kinds of pastry and 10 different breads are made daily at the Superba Bakehouse.
