Executive chef and owner Eric Cook has honed his mastery of Southern comfort food in the kitchens of some of the Crescent City’s most venerable culinary landmarks, Brennan’s and Commander’s Palace included. A son of New Orleans, here he delivers a delicious love letter to his hometown with inspired takes on classics such as shrimp and grits paired with smoky sausage and roasted red peppers, po’boys overflowing with crispy deep-fried oysters, and chicken and dumplings (his mom’s recipe, naturally).

You won’t find cocktails here, and just a tiny selection of beer, but that’s by design. Owner and sommelier Skye LaTorre’s extensive, carefully curated wine list is one she hopes invites exploration from both casual sippers and in-the-know connoisseurs. The food menu, developed by chef Heathcliffe Hailey (formerly of Mimi’s in the Marigny), is also meant to complement the wine — not the other way around. Locals flock to this festive, family-owned gem located in the heart of Fat City for both their traditional and bayou-inspired Mexican fare. Soft handmade blue corn and flour tortillas serve as the canvas for meaty tacos, perfectly stuffed burritos, and cheesy enchiladas. Also on the menu: Louisiana fried crawfish tacos dressed with spicy lime slaw, jalapeno ranch, and queso fresco. Pro tip: Save room for some crunchy, buttery, cinnamon-dusted churros. This Creole-Italian bistro — part of the family of restaurants that include Riccobono’s Peppermill, Riccobono’s Panola Street Cafe, and Cafe Navarre — continues the Riccobono tradition of serving up reliably flavor-packed fare, but this time in a modern space that’s both lounge and tavern. As such, specialty cocktails (think pineapple -cilantro margaritas and frozen palomas) share equal billing with shareable plates, which include duck empanadas served with a sweet chile sauce and bacon-doused brussels sprouts — all of which can be enjoyed al fresco on the covered outdoor patio.

The beloved Big Easy institution, open since 1932, is known for its sizzling steak platters. In fact, according to local lore, founder Charlie Petrossi was the first to bring this one-time innovation to the forefront, inspiring other steakhouses to follow suit. Today, the legendary sizzling platters, classic potato au gratin, and famous blue cheese wedge salad remain under the care of Aaron Burgau (of Patois and Central City BBQ) and Neil McClure, who formerly ran McClure’s BBQ at the NOLA Brewing taproom. Another enduring tradition from throughout the decades: Don’t expect a printed menu to greet you at the table.

Executive chef Thomas Hines helms the kitchen at this American brasserie situated inside the Loews New Orleans, bringing with him a wealth of experience gained working in restaurants around the globe, from his native New Orleans and New York City to locales as far-flung as Thailand. He draws upon his world travels to provide inspiration for the menu here, which pays homage to the culturally diverse landscape of the city as well. Diners will find a range of hearty hometown favorites including a velvety seafood and andouille sausage gumbo, as well as a take on crispy Vietnamese crepes, known as banh xeo, which are filled here with shredded smoked chicken and curry coconut sauce.

Bright and bold flavors are the name of the game at chef Edgar Caro’s Latin-Caribbean focused bistro. Caro, influenced by his Latin heritage, takes advantage of fresh, locally sourced ingredients to put his spin on traditional dishes from Colombia and the Caribbean. Sister restaurant to The Delachaise, this charming wine bar and bistro from Evan Hayes is a preferred local hangout for good reason: With a welcoming front porch and ample outdoor seating, the space lends itself well to families, groups of friends, and couples alike. Of course, there’s also the food. Chef Barry Credeur is behind the menu here, offering internationally inspired dishes that take advantage of fresh seafood — try the chargrilled octopus or the coconut curry mussels — and produce from local farms. The restaurant also has a full bar, and of course an extensive global wine list.
