Before chef Enrique Limardo made a name for himself helming the kitchens at Seven Reasons and Immigrant Food, he was cutting his teeth in D.C. at this fast-casual chicken spot — with a bar in the next room. Billing itself as Washington’s longest standing Mexican and Salvadoran restaurant, El Tamarindo has been a local mainstay since 1982. Come for the comfort food, like pupusas, steak burritos, grilled chicken chimichangas, and fish tacos. And definitely don’t miss out on brunch on the weekends, where you can dive into huevos rancheros and breakfast pupusas.

Chef Jesse Miller works his magic in this historic former old-school bank, teaming up with co-owner Erin Edwards, whom he worked with at Bar Pilar, and industry vet Garrick Lumsden. Expect to dive into satisfying, seasonal takes like winter coconut curry, mom’s meatballs braised in tomato sauce, and roasted pork shoulder tacos, among other selections.

The name here was inspired by the owners, all immigrants who settled in Washington. Come for the show-stopping cocktails, especially the espresso martini. Tucked away in Hotel Madera and known for its eclectic cocktails, this newly revamped neighborhood mainstay just reopened. The focus on craft cocktails remains the same: don’t sleep on the hot, rum-based, Mary Poppins-inspired number. The food, from Peking duck tacos and chickpea stew to brunch favorites like chicken and waffles and kimchi pork hash, is both comforting and globally inspired.

Modeled after the friendly fish shacks that dot the New England coastline, Ford’s makes a point to serve the best seafood it can find. Think impressive fare like New England cod, Alaskan snow crab legs, pecan-crusted trout served with citrus chardonnay, and chorizo macaroni and cheese.
