With the constant dealmaking and coming and goings happening here, it could be argued that Washingtonians claim communal and bar seats at a higher rate than diners in any other American city.
And yet, at times, we still treat the bar like a fallback: the place you land when the reservation didn’t come through. But the places on this guide flip that concept on its head — each and every spot below is one where pulling up a stool is the point, not the consolation. They offer an equally good view, a looser vibe, or a walk-in shot at a table you’d otherwise wait weeks for.
Some of these rooms were built for it. Maison is a wine bar to its bones. Dōgon‘s bar is a destination unto itself. Lutèce has a 12-seat marble bar that might be the best seat in Georgetown.
