New on Resy: Osteria Langhe, Perilla Korean, Sportsman’s, Outside Voices, and More

Aldo Zaninotto and Cameron Grant’s inviting spot specializes in the rich, meaty fare of Piedmont, in a casual atmosphere with bare wood tables, a rustic bar and cheery little sidewalk patio with cherry-red tables and chairs. Feast on subtly elegant dishes, like vitello tonnato with poached beef and arugula in citrusy tuna caper aioli, prosciutto-wrapped rabbit loin, and the now-famous plin — the legendary Piemontese agnolotti — in buttered thyme sauce. Regional Italian wines beautifully complement it all.

After two years of workshopping its New York-style pizzas by the slice at West Loop neighborhood bar Lone Wolf, Pizza Lobo landed a permanent home in Logan Square, complete with 4,000-sq.-ft. patio. Its 10- or 16-inch specialty and build-your-own pies join an expanded menu of snacks and salads, all from former Bad Hunter executive chef Dan Snowden. Start with chopped antipasti with bitter greens and truffled buttermilk dressing, then dig into our current fave: the “amatrice’ yo-self” pizza, with roasted tomato, calabrian chiles, red onion and pancetta. If ordering for carryout or delivery, 32-oz. half growlers of beer, aka howlers, make ideal pizza companions.

As fall descends, we’re craving crispy scallion pancakes and hearty kimchi stew laced with pork, noodles and tofu from this modern Korean barbecue. Perilla’s roomy back deck, set beneath a custom mural of First Lady Michelle Obama, is a must for al-fresco dining well into the chillier months. Not least because they’ve created a Korean fried chicken pop-up especially for the patio (and carryout): Sir Chicken, as they’ve dubbed it, slings crackly-skinned hot chicken spiced with Korean flavorings and a choice of sauce, alongside seasoned fries and house slaw. Supplement with buttered brussels sprouts from the regular menu, and enjoy it with a bracing An Old Friend cocktail, which combines tart yuzu, soju, honey and citron tea.

This beloved minichain known for Quad Cities-style pizza with chewy, malty crust has fully embraced contactless ordering and payment for (nearly) anxiety-free dine-in and to-go ordering. We’d suggest preceding your crumbled sausage pie (our fave) with crunchy-stretchy mozzarella sticks, and one of Roots’s notoriously gargantuan salads, such as the green goddess studded with broccoli and bacon. Or branch out with a chef collaboration pizza — as fall hits, we’re loving chef Oliver Poilevey’s Le Bouchon French onion soup pie, with onion soubise, caramelized onions and Gruyère.

This newcomer wine bar from Team Scofflaw proves that a serious wine spot can indeed vibe like an easygoing neighborhood joint. Grab one of an oft-changing series of low-intervention red, white, orange and fizzy wines, just right for sharing a bottle on a lazy afternoon. Or stay a while in their chill, spacious L-shaped wine garden, which sports picnic tables and Adirondack chairs on squishy Astroturf. There’s sustenance, too, of the griddled ham melt, chicken wings and fried beef (or vegan beef!) taco variety.

In several firsts for this cozy, taxidermy-filled watering hole, Sportsman’s Club is taking credit cards and reservations (and has embraced contactless QR-code menus) — inevitable evolutions to suit these pandemic times. You’ll want to book ahead to nab a coveted seat on this stylish tavern’s back patio: a roomy, stone-paved urban backyard with a firepit and mobile bar, beneath a canopy of twinkly lights. Drinkers are limited to an hour and a half, just enough to sip one or two of the four daily-rotating cocktails, like the boozy and beguiling Sportsman’s, with bourbon, Zucca rabarbaro, bitters and absinthe.

Those of us longing for an escape need only head to this River North newcomer from Adolfo Garcia and Phil Stefani, inspired by a beachside bungalow nestled on a beach somewhere in Latin America. The Diver’s menu features light bites by chef Sergio Sanchez and bold cocktails from Jasmine Diaz. Think bright ceviches, tuna tostadas and tacos packed with beer-battered cod and slaw, or shrimp, pico and fresh mango. Washed down with a Tropical Spritz, with watermelon, mint, aperol and cava, you’ll almost feel a Caribbean breeze wafting down Ohio St.

One of our favorite cocktail bars in the city is inconspicuously tucked inside the Acme Hotel. Book a socially distanced table in the secluded lounge, and try the signature Dealer’s Choice, in which bartenders dream up bespoke cocktails based on your preferred flavor choices, spirit and glassware. Or order one of half a dozen inventive bottled cocktails to go. Might we suggest the beguiling Hip Flask, with rye, Jamaican rum, amaro and garam masala?

This cozy, polished eatery has been a Lakeview fixture since owner Drew Johnson debuted it in the old Jack’s on Halsted in 1996. Known for impeccable service,  and American bistro classics like bacon-wrapped dates, baked crab cakes and filet mignon with red wine reduction, regulars also flock to Drew’s for the outstanding cocktails. As the weather cools down, we’re craving the sultry, sweet Elton John, with bourbon, Angostura bitters, cherry-bark vanilla bitters, and demerara syrup.

Team Scofflaw at it again, with this come-as-you-are hangout that boasts one of our favorite patios in the city — well-spaced picnic tables set beneath big umbrellas, edged by a pair of corner fireplaces to warm you as temperatures drop. A solid bar food menu of double burgers with American cheese and fried chicken sandwiches rounds out the simple beer list and potent cocktail lineup. On that note, the Moonlighter offers about a half-dozen bottled cocktails for carryout and delivery, including its excellent frozen piña colada.

Speaking of the busy team from beloved Osteria Langhe, this summer they debuted a second Logan Square restaurant dedicated to Rome’s Testaccio neighborhood. Located in the bygone Quiote space, the mix of classics include salumi platters and pappardelle carbonara, plus Mediterranean-inspired dishes pulled from the wood-burning oven, such as whole branzino with olives and preserved lemon from executive Jacob Soloman. Upward of 40 natural-minded wines offer a tour of the Mediterranean.

This hipster favorite in Wicker Park is known for scratch-made, veg-friendly comfort food, including a killer brunch menu. The huevos diablos — fried eggs, jack cheese, hand-pressed corn tostadas, chipotle sauce, black beans and brown rice — is a never-fail hangover cure, best washed down with the vegan Bloody Hammer, comprising Tito’s and house Bloody Mary mix, and topped with a fried pickle, natch. While the weather holds, you’ll find us on Handlebar’s lush, fenced-in beer garden. Note: Due to its small size, the bar isn’t taking walk-in orders; call ahead or order online.

Dually named for its signature tori (chicken) broth and the Torino Ichi good luck festival, chef Yuji Hayashi’s three-year-old favorite offers all manner of Japanese bites, plus bao, donburi (rice dishes) and, of course, plenty of ramen options. As the weather cools, we’re ordering the curry ramen — with pork broth, house curry blend, soft-boiled eggs and slabs of karaage fried chicken — on repeat. Since the pandemic, the diner-voted best ramen restaurant on the North Shore has become contact-free, too.

At this cheery Mexican eatery, chef-owner Carlos Tello specializes in moles, thanks in large part to his mother-in-law and consulting chef, Clementina Flores Bahena. There’s enchiladas doused in spicy rojo and grilled chicken breast swimming in all three—chocolaty negro, mild verde and rojo. You’ll also find excellent cochinita pibil, sopes (masa boats) stuffed with plantains and chicken, and savory queso fundido laced with chorizo. Whatever you order, make sure it comes with fresh, housemade corn tortillas.

This cozy corner restaurant has been an Italian-American staple of Lincoln Park since 1995, featuring refreshed classic dishes, like grilled polenta with Italian sausage and bell peppers; pork chops with grape chutney; and rigatoni with mushrooms, sun-dried tomato, prosciutto, peas and cream. The secluded sidewalk patio beneath strings of twinkle lights and weekly half-price wine bottles might be enough to make you switch date night to Tuesday.

If you grew up anywhere near the southwest suburbs, chances are, you spent at least one birthday or anniversary party at Emilio Gervilla’s lively flagship, where cold and hot tapas like pan con tomate with serrano ham and grilled beef skewers precede big shallow pans of excellent seafood and meat paella — all paired with juicy, fruit-flecked sangria. Emilio’s boasts a roomy walled-in patio bedecked in colorful flowers, and a well-spaced dining room with tile floors and festive, frescoed walls. Customizable menus allow you to bring the fiesta home if you’re staying in.
