The August Hit List: Ungrafted, Hog Island, ABV, and More

Join Ungrafted for one of its virtual wine classes. The Dogpatch wine bar is open Tuesday through Saturday for retail bottles and to-go meals, but several times a week, co-owner Chris Gaither, an award-winning sommelier, hosts a wine session, whether on Sherry, or island wines, or South African wines. There’s nothing quite like slurping on oysters outside Hog Island’s Ferry Building back patio while staring at the sea and the Bay Bridge — it’s a beautiful site. The pro tip is to make a Resy on a Saturday when you can also visit the farmers’ market to procure pristine produce.

Montesacro has reopened its patio for your pinsa fix. If you’re unfamiliar, pinsa is a Roman flatbread similar to pizza except lighter, airier, and oval-shaped. They’re topped deliciously, and there’s also a selection of salads and salumi and dessert pinsa topped with Nutella and pistachio butter to round out the meal.

Did you know one of the best burgers in San Francisco is made in a tiny kitchen in a bar serving some of the best cocktails in the city? Said burger is found in ABV on 16th street. They’re also doing soft shell crab tacos and braised pork taco kits with homemade flour tortillas, best paired with a tamal cocktail, which features corn and tortilla-infused mezcal.

Angler has been making use of its hearth and pivoted to Saison Smokehouse. There’s a meaty menu of smoked chicken, pastrami brisket, and ribs as well as sides like biscuits, slaw, beans, and greens. You can also stock your larder with broth, olives, pickles, sauces, and more. Make a Resy for the Embarcadero patio.

Bar Crudo is truly one of the most special seafood spots in San Francisco, and they’ve now transformed into El Crudo Taco, offering a selection of flour and corn tortillas made in house with imported heirloom Mexican corn. They still have oysters, chowder, and unreasonably reasonably priced bottles of wine for you to enjoy on a makeshift patio on Divis.

AK Subs is a small, wife-and-husband owned-and-operated sandwich spot in SoMa that’s been around for over 26 years. They’ve got a sizable menu of sandwiches and items off their grill, from burgers to BLTs. But if you’re a first-timer and a meat-eater, we suggest starting with Tony’s Hot Pastrami, which features a massive mound of thinly sliced pastrami piled high with melty Swiss cheese. Get some extra yellow mustard on the side to cut through it all.

San Francisco favorite Pizzahacker has opened its second location in Marin at the Tam Junction. It’s in partnership with a brewery called The Junction, and the pies are bigger and better than ever. There are beers by the bottle and on tap, and a large back patio with picnic tables where you order via a menu online. This is the perfect post-hike meal.

One of the best biscuits in S.F. is found in a tiny bakery on 20th Street in the Mission. Started by baker Judy Kahn, her biscuits are buttery, flakey, crumbly, and square. She does them in three versions: classic, cheddar bacon, and dill Swiss scallion. She also does breakfast sandwiches, which are insane.

We’re fans of the treat-yourself mentality, especially these days. Luckily for us, pasta master Michael Tusk has moved his three-Michelin-star Quince to the farm. Choose from a reservation at either Fresh Run Farm or McEvoy Ranch. There’ll be a reception, farm tour, and then a tasting menu lunch made with ingredients harvested that day.
