New on Resy: Reveler’s Hour, ABC Pony, Maialino Mare

When the team behind Tail Up Goat turns to pasta and wine, you end up with a cult favorite in the making. Welcome to Reveler’s Hour, a sequel restaurant poetically named after a lyric in a Greek drinking song, where over 50 wines are poured by the glass, and more than a half dozen pastas dazzle.

If there’s anyone who could be trusted to deliver an Italian and Asian cuisine crossover, it’s Erik Bruner-Yang. The chef behind Maketto and Brothers and Sisters dreamt up ABC Pony, a bi-cultural gem with a 90’s bend (VHS tapes and cassettes line the shelves), where egg drop soup is amped up with Parmesan rinds and lumpia is stuffed with burrata and meatballs.

As Danny Meyer’s first full-service restaurant outside of New York, Maialino Mare gives a seafaring edge to Roman trattorias, honing in on D.C.’s coastal bounty. And with a local network of farmers and fishers in tow, chef Rose Noel whips up salt-baked bass and shrimp fettuccine alongside the Roman classics, from fried baby artichokes to the eponymous slow-roasted suckling pig for two.

Perusing Ted’s Bulletin’s menu is like going over the canon of American fare. Breakfast is served all day, and meatloaf, grilled cheese, and country-fried chicken parade on diner-style plates. And just like its menu, Ted’s is cushy, warm, and for everyone. Note: If you’d rather share your buttermilk pancakes with a book, head to its sister spot, Kramerbooks’ Afterwords Cafe.

When acclaimed restaurateur Ashok Bajaj joins forces with ex-White House chef Frank Ruta, what do you get? You get Annabelle, a Kalorama fine dining destination with a retro gleam. Amongst lush greenery and wood-paneled walls, plates like Maine lobster américaine contain just as much of a throwback punch.

For its latest noodle shop, the Daikaya Group (Bantam King, Daikaya, Haikan) supplemented its signature traditional Sapporo-style ramen with a bit of fun. Think a red miso clam broth alongside a vegan tomato-curry take, both of which should be liberally topped with Pecorino cheese. And if the offbeat bowls woo you, make a beeline to the group’s recent opening, Tonari, where pizza and pasta get a Japanese twist.

With its funky chandeliers, cozy banquettes, and laid-back atmosphere, The Fainting Goat is U Street’s go-to haunt. Locals gather here for happy hour or late-night drinks, and everything in between. A menu rife with the usual suspects — steak frites, mac n’ cheese, chicken wings — keeps the buzzing crowds happy. Find the namesake goat in the cheese fondue and cheesecake.

There’s a bit of Parisian flair imbued in the lovely Primrose, a Brookland bistro with a Michelin Bib. Here, chef Jon De Paz dives into all things French for his menu, doling out cheesy onion soup with a kombu-mushroom broth, pork cheek au poivre, and cauliflower gratin. On the sipping side, the wine is as French as the plates, with an emphasis on natural bottles.

The blue cheese mussels here beat those of Bobby Flay, and we’d expect no less from a restaurant that goes through 1,200 pounds of the bivalves in a week. Granville Moore’s is a self-described “tavern with a healthy Belgium fetish,” so you can guess where the extensive beer list pulls from. The Belgian influences are also seen in the moules frites selections, from creamy mushroom to Thai red curry.

City Winery is all about the grapes — so much so that every dish comes with a recommended wine pairing. A winery, music venue, and restaurant all in one, this sprawling Ivy City facility sources its grapes from the West Coast for house-made wines, poured straight from the barrel. Get the braised duck tacos with a suggested glass of Pinot Noir.

At Carving Room’s follow-up restaurant, chef Oded Weizmann gives a proper platform to his Middle Eastern and North African roots. CR NoMa fires cheesy flatbreads topped with slow-roasted ribeye, kofta skewers dipped in tangy sauces, and pork-and-brisket meatballs sauced in tomato poblano, all alongside the house-cured meats that made the original sandwich shop’s renown.

At El Sapo Cuban Social Club, chef Raynold Mendizábal goes personal. The festive restaurant — where ropa vieja is joyously devoured — gets to the heart of the cuisine the Havana-born chef grew up with. If you wanted to expand your culinary horizons beyond the Cubano, you’re in for a rum-soaked spell.

Blink and you could miss this unassuming nook, where a riveting Japanese tasting unfolds. Chef-owner Yuh Shimomura brings 15 years of Japanese kitchen experience to his five-course menu (a steal at $55), and Nasime properly stuns, from slivers of fresh sashimi to a scratch-made lobster miso ramen noodle soup. Pro Tip: Book the chef’s counter and get face time with the chef.

At this family-owned and operated brick-walled enclave, shrimp scampi and hummus crowd the tables. LiLLiEs mixes the farm-fresh traditions of Italy with Mediterranean strokes, but it’s the silky pastas here that really shine: lobster ravioli, tortellini, and lasagna are sure bets. Whether you want to follow up with the veal piccata or roasted lamb shank is up to you.

A Mexican eatery outfitted in bright pink walls, Agua 301 serves as Navy Yard’s buoyant waterfront cantina. Think modern takes on time-honed dishes, like guacamole laced with crab meat and sweet corn, bistec tacos studded with blue cheese, and a chipotle-infused chocolate mousse. Keep the margaritas coming.
