New on Resy: Redbird, Cold Beer, The Federal

The former Bacchanalia space is shedding its fine dining skin, in favor of a more casual affair. Enter the newly opened Redbird, where a “come as you are” philosophy rings true in everything from the dining room (open and luminous, with a view of the kitchen from every seat) to the plates, where ex-Watershed chef Zeb Stevenson cooks up the very best of what’s local and in season (think summer squash fritters, poached leeks, and grilled okra).

Described as the “sophisticated sister” to the acclaimed Gunshow, Cold Beer is the latest venture from chef Kevin Gillespie. And in this bright and vibrant locale (set with polar bear art, stark white furnishings, and sprawling outdoor spaces), mixology takes center stage. Cold Beer shakes up an ever-changing list of cocktails and draft beers—courtesy of mixology extraordinaire Mercedes O’Brien—with food much like Gunshow’s (read: what the cooks want to cook), minus the cart wheeling, but with the same amount of fun.

The Federal is a pocket-sized bistro with one foot in the world of European brasseries and the other in the realm of American steakhouses. Helmed by chefs Shaun Doty and Lance Gummere, this Midtown destination delights with its bicultural cuisine, where French onion soup is amped up with oxtail, and a swordfish à la Française (lemon, parsley, capers, beurre blanc) sits next to a 30-day dry-aged Kansas City strip.

A one-time cotton storage facility, Serpas True Food evolved into one of GQ magazine’s “Ten Best New Restaurants in America” (2009), and has remained a neighborhood gem ever since. This Old Fourth Ward eatery presents delectable Southern cuisine with Louisiana flair, like crackly flash-fried oysters dipped in tartar, house-smoked salmon chips with chipotle cream cheese, juicy Berkshire pork chop atop smoked cheddar grits, and decadently powdered beignets.

You can count on chef Deborah VanTrece to revamp soul food. Here, the beloved chef is cooking up all sorts of Southern classics with a twist, incorporating elements and ideas gleaned from her travels across the globe. That means smoked salmon-belly bacon with creamed corn risotto, hoisin oxtails with gingery bok choy, country-style pork ribs in a Coca-Cola gochujang sauce, and mouthwatering cocktails.

Nestled in an iconic Decatur space, The Deer and the Dove is a go-to for fire-kissed wild game. Anchored by a wood-burning oven, the rustic New American menu is rife with rabbit, duck, and venison, and produce procured from nearby Georgia farms. Deeply delicious and comforting, you’re in for duck sausage roulade, freshly-made tagliatelle, peach-lacquered quail, and one of the best dry-aged burgers around.

If you ever find yourself in Duluth or Roswell, in dire need of a beautifully done steak, then Stoney River is the place for you. The upscale steakhouse chain is known for its exceptional offerings, doling out hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood, and boutique wines. So, settle into the polished and dimly lit room; you’re in for the likes of coffee-cured filet mignon and steak au poivre.

Modest and unpretentious, honest and homemade, such are the hallmarks of the Italian trattoria. And at Trattoria One41, chef Mark Sublette abides by these principles, lovingly crafting the paragons of nonna cuisine, from antipasti (homemade sausage, spicy veal meatballs) and pasta (braised beef short rib cannelloni), to pesce and carne (grilled branzino, veal Parmigiana).

There’s a certain kick to the plates at this relaxed neighborhood haunt. And that’s because The Corner Grille makes liberal use of the Cajun pantry for a delectable made-from-scratch menu. Expect the hits—catfish po’ boy, seafood gumbo, Cajun chicken quesadilla—alongside tavern favorites, from turkey clubs to chicken tenders.

A favorite of the Dunwoody crowd, Carbonara Trattoria reaches across the Atlantic for a menu that dreams of Italy. Warmly-lit and family-owned, the eatery doesn’t steer far from beloved classics, firing bucatini all’ Amatriciana, cappellini fra diavolo, seafood pappardelle, and veal Piccata.
