The Bay Area’s Nominees For the 2023 James Beard Awards

This year’s James Beard Foundation Awards class of semifinalists has been unveiled, and as usual, the San Francisco Bay Area has a host of nominees. This year’s class is led by SoMa’s Cal-Moroccan showstopper Mourad, which is up for Outstanding Restaurant in the country, and Mission favorite Trick Dog, which is up for Outstanding Bar.

Finalists will be announced in March, and awards handed out June 5 in Chicago. The local restaurants that made the cut are listed below, with those available to book on Resy highlighted as such; find the full national list here on the Beard Foundation website.

Outstanding Restaurant

One of the most ambitious, and best, restaurants in California finally gets the national recognition it deserves. Mourad Lahlou’s blockbuster SoMa restaurant, the downtown sister to his beloved Aziza, showcases his signature high-wire Cal-Moroccan cooking, in a stunning, sprawling space. There’s no place like this in the city.

Best Chef: California (Intu-on Kornnawong)

Pim Techamuanvivit changed the game when she opened this Thai restaurant off Union Square. Her celebrated Thai eatery is as delicious as it gets, churning house-made curry pastes and condiments daily, for fiery goodness.

Best Chef: California (Robbie Wilson)

Robbie Wilson and Emily Perry Wilson of Bird Dog in Palo Alto know what they’re doing with this handsome Hayes Valley restaurant, drawing from both French and Japanese cuisine (the menu is long on seafood, much of it raw). A special point of pride is the high-end vintage sound system, and there’s a listening room off the bar.
