Originally hailing from Spain, Michelin-starred chef Pepe Moncayo of Singapore brings the heat to his first stateside restaurant with eclectic Spanish-Japanese cuisine. His six-course kaiseki, which changes all the time, is not to be missed. You’ll be in good hands.

This downtown, subterranean lounge revolves around whiskey, whether it’s Japanese, rye, Scotch, Irish, or American. Delectable small plates that pair perfectly with a glass include baked penne al ragu and classic grilled cheese.

Known for its square slices on crust resembling focaccia, Sonny’s is all about giving you options. While you can order pizza from the menu (with names like Wolfie and Pesky Mario), you can also choose to create a custom pie. Sonny’s covered, outdoor, heated “pizza garden” also has plenty of fans, making it well equipped to handle whatever Mother Nature throws down.

This institution was a must for Washington interns, college students and anyone else craving affordably priced drinks, but now it’s all grown up. Helmed by the team behind Nero wine bar, it’s a sophisticated sushi lounge with a Japanese-Southern theme. Think togarashi-spiced fried chicken, venison, and étouffée.

From the crew behind the popular Oaxacan spot Espita Mezcaleria comes Las Gemelas (“twin girls”), which is fittingly home to two different restaurant concepts: fast-casual Taqueria Las Gemelas and upmarket Las Gemelas Cocina Mexicana. When President Biden stopped by the taqueria, he ordered two quesadillas: hongos with salsa taquera, and chorizo with habanero salsa; plus four tacos — al pastor, lengua, carnitas and barbacoa. And he told his staff to not to touch his order. Smart man.

Dining Status: Both concepts are open for indoor and patio dining, but reservations are only required for Las Gemelas Cocina Mexicana. Delivery and carryout are only available at Taqueria Las Gemelas.

Kick off your shoes and relax in Echo Park’s beer, wine and cocktail garden. The garden serves slices and whole pies from Andy’s Pizza. Expect burrata margherita, mushroom & onion and white pizza, among other options.

A neighborhood hangout since 2018, Church Hall’s enormous beer hall offers your choice of 28 draft beers, two draft cocktails, two boozy slushies, wine, and a full bar. Church Hall also partnered with Georgetown Wing Company, which brings the pub grub you know and love, but with a contemporary twist. The lineup includes a black bean veggie burger, a Buffalo fried chicken sandwich and sweet potato tots.

Named after Rome’s infamous fifth emperor, Nero slings cocktails harkening back to Ancient Rome. Among others, there’s Brutus’ Betrayal, Nectar of the Gods, and The Rightful Heir. While most of the plates are Italian in influence (pizza and garlic shrimp with risotto among them), we’re most intrigued by the Indian tandoori chicken pops with garlic ginger yogurt sauce.
