Ittoryu Gozu, the Gozu team’s fine dining take on the bento box.
Who Goes There: Serena Chow, pastry chef and co-owner at Marlena, a refined California kitchen in Bernal Heights.
What She Gets: The bento boxes. “You can really see the love and care that the team takes to make your meal a whole experience that you can enjoy at home,” Chow says.
Serena’s Pro Tip: “They also have a weekly butcher shop where you are able to order specialty A5 wagyu to take home and cook yourself, which is perfect for any date night. Don’t forget to add on the pastry items from Ethel Koh’s Bakeshop. There is no better way to end such a luxurious meal than with a sweet treat.”

Little Sichuan Restaurant

Little Sichuan Restaurant, a San Mateo staple for Chinese cuisine. “The restaurant has been around since I was a child, and the consistency of the food after all these years is really admirable,” Chow says.
Who Goes There: Serena Chow of Marlena.
What She Gets: The spicy Sichuan noodles.
Serena’s Pro Tip: “Don’t forget to order a side of scallion pancakes — they’re the best in the Bay!”

Pie Society

Pie Society, an online pie pop-up from James Beard Award-winning pastry chef Angela Pinkerton, with pickups in San Francisco, Berkeley, and Oakland.
Who Goes There: Serena Chow of Marlena.
What She Gets: The chicken pot pie, baked in a flaky, buttery shell and topped with a fluffy scallion biscuit. “It is the definition of perfect,” Chow says

Yo También Cantina

Inner Sunset

Yo También Cantina, an Inner Sunset hangout with Venezuelan-inspired California fare.
Who Goes There: Brandon Jew, chef and owner at Mister Jiu’s, where he twists and turns Chinese and Cantonese classics through a California lens.
What He Gets: The tamales, salads, and any of the drinks.
Brandon’s Pro Tip: Be sure to pick up some of their pantry items — salsas, dried beans, olive oil.

Kantine

Kantine, a Market Street café where the Scandinavian breakfast reigns supreme.
Who Goes There: Brandon Jew of Mister Jiu’s.
What He Gets: The rye bread and the customizable brunch box with smoke trout, Bay shrimp, beet hummus, rye and crackers, and a soft boiled egg.
Brandon’s Pro Tip: “It’s all interesting, textural, and colorful — an amazing way to start your day.”

Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous

Mr. and Mrs. Miscellaneous, a Dogpatch ice cream shop whipping up out surprising flavors.
Who Goes There: Brandon Jew of Mister Jiu’s.
What He Gets: Pints and pints of ice cream! Jew’s last haul included young coconut, peppermint, hot cocoa with marshmallows, and mango with chili and lime leaf.

Papaito Rotisserie

Papaito Rotisserie, a next-level rotisserie with outposts in San Leandro and Hayward.
Who Goes There: Nelson German, chef and owner at Sobre Mesa, a chef-driven Afro-Latino cocktail lounge in Oakland.
What He Gets: The rotisserie chicken of course, and the corn salad.

Daughter’s Diner

Emmy’s Spaghetti Shack

Emmy’s Spaghetti Shack, the Mission’s beloved pasta haunt imbued with old-school flair.
Who Goes There: Christopher Russell, chef and owner at Red’s House, a modern Jamaican grill house helmed by Russell and his mother Sharon.
What He Gets: The spaghetti puttanesca and the zoodles.

Crazy Pepper

Crazy Pepper, a small mom-and-pop Chinese restaurant near Balboa Park.
Who Goes There: Christopher Russell of Red’s House.
What He Gets: The wor wonton soup and Szechuan grilled butter beef. “The food takes a while but it’s the best Chinese I’ve had since the pandemic started,” Russell says.

Indulgence Tea Bar

What He Gets: The Pikachu bubble tea (sparkling mango calamansi) and the strawberry milk bar with oat milk.

What She Gets: The Diabalita pizza — Calabrian chiles, goat cheese, and freshly shaved garlic.

Nikkei Sushi

Who Goes There: Silvia McCollow of Nido’s BackYard.
What She Gets: The Nikkei roll (shrimp tempura roll topped with crab, yellowtail, avocado, and tobiko) and whatever the sashimi special of the day is.
