New On Resy: Counter Culture, The Royal Oak Marylebone, Fare

It’s an immutable fact that the best seats in the house are at the bar, and it’s why Counter Culture have done away with tables entirely. A smaller, more intimate spin-off of legendary Clapham establishment The Dairy, the restaurant offers a chef’s counter experience with none of the decorum—delicious ‘snacks’ and small plates are prepared in front of diners and served immediately, while drinks are BYO, adding to the casual vibe.

There’s a laid-back appeal to Fare that makes it an irresistible go-to regardless of the occasion. An all-day Clerkenwell bar, restaurant and hangout from restaurateur Michael Sager and cocktail whisperer Michael Dzelzainis, there’s plenty to love—the bright, spacious upstairs has superb cocktails on tap and cracking small plates (modestly presented as “bar snacks”), while the newly opened basement dining room has larger dishes perfect for sharing with friends.

Among the gems lining Hoxton Street is Kinilaw and Buko, a tiny Filipino restaurant and bar specialising in classic kinilaw (a marinated seafood dish, similar to ceviche). Opened by the same team behind 100 Hoxton next door, it’s a welcome addition to the neighbourhood. The marinated scallop kinilaw is a go-to, but don’t miss specials like chilli fried rice with longanisa sausage, or creative Filipino ice creams and sorbets served in mini-cones and baby coconut shells.

A beautiful pub with great food sells itself—think legendary Sunday roasts and a finessed pub menu that showcases the best British produce, presented with French accents. Alternatively, it’s perfectly reasonable just to slide into a seat at the bar and spend an afternoon drinking and eating ‘nduja scotch eggs—your call.
