You might think you’re in West Texas when you step into this luminous tribute to Tex-Mex and New Mexican cuisine from noted pit master John Lewis (Lewis Barbecue), and you’ll be glad you’re there amidst the steer-horn sconces and floor-to-ceiling ristras of dried Hatch chiles. Don’t miss the pork-filled “Christmas” burrito — covered in red and green chile sauces.

Vietnamese food fans have been following chef Thai Phi from food truck to pop-up to food court. Now, he’s got a dazzlingly colorful sit-down restaurant where an array of noodle dishes take center stage (do not miss the garlic noodles!). Phi’s motto: “Ngon quá!” — “Delicious!”

You might want to bring a date or a mate to this intimate seafood place across the street from the popular Stems & Skins wine bar (run by the same team), with its whimsical maritime decor and its menu full of dishes that call out for sharing — start with some oysters and absolutely order the whole fish if it’s on the menu.

French onion or she-crab soup? Escargots or fried green tomatoes? France meets the Lowcountry and they get along superbly at chef Richard Hege’s Freshfields Village bistro, a longtime Johns Island favorite.

Expect traditional tapas (patatas bravas, tortilla española) and a connoisseur’s larder full of artisanal cured meats and cheeses at this festive Spanish offshoot of the D.C. original. Spain’s favorite cocktail, the “gin-tonic,” is featured, and the Spanish wine list is small but first-rate.

‘Twas a sad day when the legendary Big John’s, a popular hangout for Citadel cadets, closed in 2015 after 60 years. Thankfully, three Citadel alumni have brought it back, complete with its famous tufted red velvet barstools, clinker-brick walls, and a new casual menu of fun-to-eat food — including a Tex-Mex-flavored Cowboy Brunch you shouldn’t miss on weekends.

Johns Island restaurant heavyweight Rick Agius (Smoky Oak Taproom, Tattooed Señorita Cantina) blends Lowcountry seafood and uptown sushi here, and diners couldn’t be happier. Where else can you find a seafood tower that includes not just the usual oysters, shrimp, and lobster, but also sushi rolls, nigiri, and sashimi?

Here’s a secret worth knowing: a candlelit reservation-only speakeasy — named for a racy song by the indie rock band Lustra (featured in the movie EuroTrip) — behind a moving bookcase in the old billiards room at the recently reborn Big John’s Tavern. Don’t tell Scotty.

Craft cocktails by the where-it’s-happening pool at the boho-chic Ryder Hotel? A lively dinner and late-night scene in semi-tropical surroundings? Or maybe just morning pastries and a macchiato in an airy café setting? The Little Palm has you covered with all of the above.

You’ll want to treat yourself to one of the eight seats (reservations are a must) at this intimate, elegant caviar bar attached to Zero Restaurant + Bar at the luxury-forward Zero George boutique hotel. Regiis Ova caviar — Thomas Keller’s brand, so you know it’s the best — is featured.

You’ll find plenty of Lowcountry favorites here — from boiled peanuts to shrimp and grits — but special mention needs to go to Rose’s famous fried chicken with honey Tabasco sauce. Fans of this exuberantly colorful Charleston standby say it’s the best in town.

Maybe all you need to know about this casual, animated Wagener Terrace hotspot is that Charleston resident Bill Murray (yes, that Bill Murray) is a partner, with the title of CFO (Chief Fun Officer) — but the superlative burgers, sandwiches, and Southern specialties are a major draw, too.

Artisanal miller Greg Johnsman (Marsh Hen Mill) and Charleston caterer-consultant Nathan Thurston reinvent the diner here, with an eclectic interior (including a bar inspired by drugstore soda fountains), an in-house retail bakery, and breakfast and lunch served morning to mid-afternoon, with plenty of heirloom grains involved.

“LoLA” is short for Lowcountry and Louisiana, and that juxtaposition pretty much defines this specialist in Cajun and Creole seafood — from Gulf oysters to shrimp Creole to fried gator bites — served in an amiable Charleston atmosphere.

You can’t go wrong at this friendly brick-and-mortar spinoff of the innovative “farm-to-street” MOMO Gastrotruck opened in North Charleston by chef Justin Moore, formerly of the iconic Carolina’s. Locally sourced seafood and produce included.

There’s no shortage of seafood restaurants in the Charleston area, but this Sullivan’s Island entry brings something special to the party. Opened by the team behind The Easterly and the original Longboard in the U.S. Virgin Islands, it features fish and shellfish with a Caribbean flavor, and a laid-back tropical atmosphere that sets the scene.
