Mei Mei, Sarap, Oklava Bakery + Wine: Now on the Resy Hit List

Because chef Budgie Montoya’s modern riffs on Filipino classics have thrust Sarap to the forefront of London’s Filipino renaissance. Slow-roast pork lechon, market fish kinilaw with calamansi and natural wines are on the menu at this tiny Brixton gem, where each dish tells its founder’s story in vivid detail. 

Because Oklava’s new Fitzrovia location continues the tradition of modern Turkish cuisine that made the original a gamechanger. This cosy new spot also turns out excellent pastries, Turkish small plates, and gluggable wines by the glass; there’s also a killer brunch on Saturdays. The pistachio French toast comes with a banana jam that deserves its own half-time show.

Because the reviews confirm what we already knew — Mei Mei is one of the best new places to eat at any price point. A love letter to the kopitiams (coffee shops) of her native Singapore, chef Elizabeth Haigh lovingly turns out classics like nasi lemak and Hainanese chicken rice at this tiny Borough Market counter, plus there’s a standout kaya toast that you won’t be able to stop thinking about.

Because 10 Heddon Street was last year’s sleeper hit, and its new space in Soho is even better. Having relocated and renamed, Chris Leach and David Carter’s restaurant is proof that doing a few things very, very well is more than enough to keep a dining room full. Silky mortadella and ‘nduja mussels are a must, and signature hand-rolled pastas are up there with the best in the city. 

Because honest, everyday cooking is back, and Stoney Street is the best place to luxuriate in it. Led by rising star Henrietta Inman, this chic cafe in Borough Market has a dedicated pastry counter and assured, Mediterranean-tinged plates during the day, and fresh pasta at night. Florals and gleaming counters make the space a pleasure to linger in. 

Because this temple to sustainable dining is as good as we had hoped. The food at Doug McMaster’s Hackney Wick restaurant is outstanding, the cocktails innovative (via Copenhagen’s ultra-trendy Empirical), and the room resonates with warmth. Plump for the tasting menu to sample a little of everything, like the Jerusalem artichokes with brown butter and tamari; brunch is also excellent. 

Because London’s most breathtakingly popular restaurant has opened in Shoreditch. Most second locations don’t warrant a second look, but the sister restaurant to the excellent Trullo proves that wallet-friendly prices and outstanding pasta are the way to Londoners’ hearts. Expect it to be as busy as the original; there’s nothing like a plate of that pici cacio e pepe hitting the table with a satisfying clatter.

Because it’s one of Soho’s most intriguing new arrivals in ages. This understated, stylish restaurant plays host to some thrilling modern Sri Lankan food, prepared using outstanding British produce. Low-intervention wines are the tipple of choice, and don’t miss the crisp mutton rolls, served with an addictive fermented chilli dip.

Because in a perfect world, every restaurant would look and feel like this svelte Shoreditch gem. A smart all-day spot, Barboun’s Middle Eastern dishes are a sure-fire hit; banana pancakes at brunch are superb, while beef manti with smoked paprika sauce and a glass of champagne are an elegant way to kick off an evening. 

Because they’re slinging the best tacos in town right now. Look past the unassuming storefront and you’ll find a spot that recreates a little Mexico City magic in — of all places — Surrey Quays, with punchy salsas, fresh toppings and great tortillas. The suadero (beef confit) and carnitas tacos are sublime, while on Sundays, expect specials like lamb birria and tortas stuffed with chorizo and fork-tender pork.

Because conscientious dining is about as 2020 as it gets, and we’re here for it. Chef Joe Allen (My Neighbours the Dumplings) has gathered a constellation of chef friends including Alex Harper (Great Scotland Yard, ex-Ledbury), pie maestro Calum Franklin, Adam Handling and Kiran Deeny of Michelin-starred Hide for a one-off fundraiser on March 13 in aid of Meningitis Now. Expect top-flight ingredients, lashings of caviar, and cutting edge cooking in aid of a superb cause.
