Vaquero Taquero, Ellis, Comedor, Now on the Resy Hit List

Because Comedor is quickly becoming the restaurant of the summer. The tequila list is a deep dive into summer’s favorite liquor, and the ever-evolving menu is full of surprises. Don’t sleep on the vegetarian entrees; on a recent visit, the heirloom beans with masa dumplings and cherry tomatoes were a stand out.

Because those trompo al pastor tacos and nopales quesadillas have a brick-and-mortar home, just in time for air-conditioning season. The menu is the same as the one at the Hyde Park food truck (which, don’t worry, remains open), with quesadillas, breakfast tacos, and possibly the best spit-roasted al pastor in town.

Because the Fareground food hall has revealed its cocktail-bar entryway. Ellis, a Michael Hsu-designed cocktail lounge, sits at street level, welcoming guests to the largely-underground Fareground. Expect plenty of outdoor seating and snacks—from Fareground restaurants—that serve as a prelude to the real deal inside.

Because this North-Central eatery is the perfect neighborhood restaurant for when it’s too hot to cook. The eclectic New American menu has a little something for everyone, and the signature cocktail menu boasts some of the best original creations in town. Try a Butterfly Effect (butterfly pea flower-infused gin with spiced pear liqueur, lavender bitters, lime, and tonic) to beat the heat.

Because Austin’s favorite patio restaurant has a newly remodeled indoor-outdoor space, which means one thing: more air conditioning. Pair that with a killer burger, crispy green beans, and a few margaritas, and you’re made in the (literal) shade.

Because it’s time for one last Matcha Pain Killer on the patio before the real heat sets in. (And maybe another one inside after that.) Round up the gang for drinks and snacks.

Because if you’re not familiar with Honduran food, it’s time to catch up. This East Austin food truck keeps the menu short and sweet, serving as a perfect introduction to this variation of Central American cuisine. You are here for the baleada, a thick, flour tortilla filled with red beans, cheese, and Honduran crema. Try the Mañanera, a don’t-call-it-a-breakfast taco with scrambled eggs.

Because this 80-year-old institution is closing in October, so you only have one summer left to get your fill. Famous for their endless varieties of toppings, Hut’s also serves hot dogs, po’ boys, chicken fried steak, and more. Get there before it’s gone.
