Vickie's Pick:
In a city overflowing with standout sushi spots, it speaks volumes that Uchi still delivers.
This month …
Houston’s dining scene continues to impress, blending heritage, innovation, and plenty of flavor. Think timeless Creole indulgence served with a side of Southern charm (find it on our recent Hit List), innovative Japanese fare that continues to set the city’s culinary standard, and a modern Vietnamese newcomer bringing fresh energy to Autry Park. It’s an exciting mix that proves the city’s food story just keeps getting better.
Annam Vietnamese Restaurant Autry Park
New opening!
Houstonians know chef-owner Chris Kinjo’s finesse from MF Sushi and Ume Sushi, but at Annam, his stunning Autry Park venture with longtime managing partner Dung “Lang” Nguyen — that received a 2025 Michelin Bib Gourmand designation — the spotlight shifts to modern Vietnamese cuisine. Led in the kitchen by chef Kaytee Nguyen, the menu reimagines classics like canh chua do bien (tamarind seafood soup) and bo nuong la lot (grilled beef in betel leaf) with contemporary flair. A smart, globally minded wine list rounds out the experience.
Bar Moon Post Oak
New opening!
The Bastion Collection — the team behind Michelin-starred Le Jardinier and Tavola — has partnered with local caterer Café Natalie to launch a new venture called Bastion Events. One of its first creations is Moon, an otherworldly cocktail bar and lounge. The name fits: Lunar inspiration runs through the concept, from the seasonally — and sometimes even daily — shifting menu to the ethereal ambiance. Perched above Tavola, the 50-seat Moon highlights inventive bar bites and vibrant, carefully crafted cocktails. DJ sets and intimate live performances complete the atmospheric, late-night experience.
Brennan's of Houston Midtown
For a dose of old-school charm complete with white tablecloths, locals know to head straight to Brennan’s of Houston. The sister to New Orleans’ legendary Commander’s Palace, this Midtown staple has been serving up refined Creole flavors since 1967. Come for the snapping turtle soup and Shrimp Chippewa and stay for the Sunday jazz brunch and chef’s table experience. There’s even a post-dinner theatre shuttle — that’s true Southern hospitality.

Uchi Houston Montrose
One of a handful of trailblazers that reshaped Houston’s dining landscape when it landed in 2012, Uchi remains a benchmark for Japanese cuisine in the city. The Houston outpost of award-winning chef Tyson Cole’s Austin original, Uchi continues to set the standard with its artful balance of tradition and innovation — a legacy carried forward in tandem with its sibling, Uchiko Houston. Fun fact: Uchi has also become an unofficial training ground for some of Houston’s most celebrated sushi chefs.

Traveler’s Cart Montrose
Husband-and-wife restaurateurs Matt and Thy Mitchell already have a hit on their hands with Traveler’s Table, their Montrose gem that takes the spirit of global exploration into the realm of food. With Traveler’s Cart, they set out to bring that same sense of culinary adventure to a more casual setting. From the yellow chicken curry of Thailand to Peruvian lomo saltado and a classic all-American roadside smash burger, whatever flavors you seek you’ll likely find on the menu. Pro tip: Stop in for weekend brunch, where the impossibly fluffy pandan soufflé pancakes are the stuff of dreams. You’re welcome.

Afuri Houston Heights
Houston’s been upping its ramen game over the years, attracting popular noodle franchises from across Japan. That includes Tokyo-based Afuri Ramen, which chose Houston for its Texas debut in November 2024. Named for Mount Afuri, the restaurant is known mainly for its signature yuzu shio ramen, which features a light chicken broth with a hint of bright citrus flavor. An izakaya-inspired menu launched recently as well, which includes sushi, skewers, and other small plates. Save room for the Basque cheesecake served with yuzu curd, whipped cream, and candied hazelnuts.
