Pennsylvania has a weird and confusing liquor license system. Basically, it’s expensive to get permission to serve booze here. But, like any good Philly story, we found a workaround. BYOBs — restaurants where you can “Bring Your Own Bottle” of wine, beer, and sometimes even liquor — have long been a special, local staple. These places are typically chef-driven, intimate, and staples of their neighborhood. Plus, without that bar tab, they make for a more affordable experience.
As Philly’s star has risen in the world of culinary accolades, some of our BYOB culture has given way to big operations with equally big bar operations.
