We’re here for the sink-into-luxury atmosphere, the classic cocktails, and the dramatic presentations of all your steakhouse favorites. Think shrimp cocktail and wedge salad, an array of steaks and chops, like a 45-day, dry-aged prime tomahawk ribeye — not to mention fish dishes, pastas, and a Wagyu burger with bacon jam.
Big Jones Andersonville

One step inside this Andersonville classic and you might just think you’re in the Deep South. And that’s in no small part thanks to chef and co-owner Paul Fehribach, who offers an uncompromising take on that region’s culinary treasures. Think deviled crawfish cakes, fried chicken, and Bourbon bread pudding, among others. Pro tip: Don’t miss brunch so you can try Fehribach’s biscuit sandwich, which was the winning dish that beat Bobby Flay.
Topaz Cafe Burr Ridge

You can’t go wrong at this Burr Ridge favorite. The Mediterranean-inspired American menu is full of just what you want to eat: fried calamari, whole branzino, fettuccine alfredo, a prime New York strip steak, and is matched by well-chosen wines at friendly prices.
Table, Donkey and Stick Palmer Square
On the surface, it’s another great neighborhood restaurant: excellent burger, pizza, great cocktails, and a fab patio. But when you dig a little deeper, there’s something happening here. It might be the housemade charcuterie or even the square latkes, or just the overall vibe of the joint. One thing’s for sure, Table, Donkey and Stick is as treasured as they come.
Pizza by Sal Wilmette
Palermo-born Salvatore Lo Cascio gained kudos for his thin-crust pizzas at Coda di Volpe, and they’re the star of the menu here — both Sal’s special pies and build-your-own varieties — alongside some pasta offerings and a few other Italian specialties. Pro tip (and a point of pride at Sal’s): Any pizza can be made gluten-free.
Bar Sotto at the Italian Village The Loop
Come to this inviting cocktail lounge beneath Chicago’s oldest Italian restaurant for the no-stress atmosphere, the signature cocktails (try The Sotto, an applewood-smoked blend of rye, vermouth, and chocolate bitters), and the pasta du jour, or some lighter bite of Italianate deliciousness.
TAO Chicago River North
Like other Tao locations around the country, the Chicago outpost is a real jaw-dropper. Asian-inspired artifacts, stunning reds, and glittery golds fill every inch of the two-level space. The action includes private rooms, extra bars, and a grand staircase for the perfect entrance. Scenesters flock for the neon orange chicken, tuna crisps, and lobster fried rice.
Q Sushi Bar & Omakase Ravenswood
Bring someone special — or even come alone — to this casual but gastronomically serious Ravenswood sushi place, where the affable chefs make dinner a fun experience while offering top-flight sushi and sashimi and a seven-course kaiseki menu tailored to just the kinds of things you want to eat.
Goose Island Salt Shed Pub West Town
Goose Island brews are on almost everybody’s list of America’s best craft beers, and you won’t find a better place to enjoy them — along with beer-friendly fare like hop-salted pretzels, smash burgers, and franks and beans — than at the brewery’s own indoor-outdoor pub, on the banks of the Chicago River.
Sunshine Daydream Wicker Park
What screams summer more than a rooftop filled with sunny yellows and Astroturf, Aperol everything, eggplant fries, and kale salads? Set atop Paradise Park, it’s a summer party in one fell swoop. All you need is you (and a few besties).
ERIS Brewery & Cider House Old Irving Park
It just feels right sipping housemade ciders and beer inside a converted Masonic temple, surrounded by soaring ceilings and exposed brick. Pub fare, such as maize-coated fried pickle chips, birria grilled cheese, and shrimp and grits, isn’t an afterthought here.
Nomonomo Japanese Pub + Grill Logan Square
A perfect pairing for its sibling restaurant, Wasabi Ramen, Nomonomo is a bustling Logan Square izakaya that has all the makings of a good time. We’re talking anything on sticks grilled over binchotan charcoal, from beef tongue with scallion sauce to chicken thigh, salted pork belly, and any vegetable. Highballs are definitely in order.
Broken Barrel Bar Lincoln Park
This is not your everyday sports bar: It’s a non-stop tailgate party with a fun-and-funky atmosphere, including an all-weather beer garden and plenty of large-screen TVs. On the food and beverage front, there’s an abundance of cocktails and brews, alongside a chef-created menu featuring house-smoked meats, variations on wings, and mac & cheese that’ll win the day.
EvaDeans Bakery & Cafe Wilmette
Is this Wilmette gem a full-service croissant-to-carrot-cake bakery, or a bright and homey restaurant serving everything from breakfast to late lunch, with a saucy cocktail program on the side? Yes to both. Chefs Garrett VanBergen and Jory Downer and pastry whiz Jordana Downer combine their excellent talents, and as a result, EvaDeans is a must.
Lady Dahlia Tequila Bar Mt. Prospect
Birdcage lampshades, bright flowers cascading from the ceiling, acres of natural wood, a sleek white bar — and almost a hundred premium Tequilas and mezcals … What more could you ask for? How about a menu offering three kinds of guacamole plus an array or tacos, fajitas, and Oaxacan-style pizzas — perfect foils for all that agave? Yes, please.
Tacombi – Fulton Market West Loop
It’s tacos and quesadillas, cervezas and aguas frescas, and a Yucatán beach-bar feel at this lively West Loop sensation — part of a 20-plus-unit, multi-state chain born out of a mobile taco stand in a repurposed VW bus in Playa del Carmen. Pro tip: Double your pleasure every Tuesday, with two tacos for the price of one.
Niche Geneva
A cozy and comfortable place, Niche couldn’t have found a better name for itself. This warm Geneva standby’s rightly celebrated for its internationally accented American menu, its encyclopedic list of whiskeys from no less than three continents, and its prestige wine list — and did we mention all the cotton candy you can eat at the end of your meal?
DIEGO West Town
The colorful, casual digs belie just what chef Stephen Sandoval is throwing down here. The Baja vibe is real at the West Loop neighborhood spot, from the street-art graffiti to faded yellow walls and blue tiled floors. Beach shack bites like shrimp and octopus tostadas and fish tacos go swimmingly with excellent cocktails, like a Mexican Negroni.
About Last Knife – Arlo Chicago Chicago Loop
Tucked inside the Arlo, About Last Knife is one of those places you’re happy to stumble across at the exact moment when you need a shrimp cocktail and, um, a cocktail. But don’t stop there: A slice of beef Wellington, a bowl of cheesy French onion soup, and a classic Caesar are just the right speed.
Marisol Chicago Streeterville
Jason Hammel, whose Lula Café has been a Logan Square favorite for almost 25 years, brings his market-driven American-international cuisine to this sleekly contemporary restaurant at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Pro tip: Watch for the lunch specials created by guest chefs — there’s some of the city’s best talent there.
One North Kitchen and Bar The Loop
This spacious restaurant, with its long, gently curving bar, its floor-to-ceiling windows, and its sidewalk patio ticks all the boxes with its all-day, hummus-to-burgers-to-whitefish menu. Pro tip: Sample the abbreviated (but still abundant) pre-theatre menu if you’re heading across the street to the Lyric Opera House.
SPACE 519 | The Lunchroom Gold Coast/Streeterville
Here’s a place worth visiting often — a bright, 40-seat breakfast-brunch-and-lunch Gold Coast hideaway inside a chic Chestnut Street shop selling apparel, accessories, and home goods. The menu is vegetable-forward (though not vegetarian) and everything is mighty fresh.
Happy Camper Old Town Old Town
It’s impossible not to have a good time at Happy Camper (Old Town or Wrigleyville). Sure, there’s an actual camper, tire swings, and swaths of twinkle lights that make you think you’re partying under the stars. But the pizzas — neither thick nor thin, but just right — never disappoint, the ornately garnished cocktails are fun, and an afternoon on the patio can fix many ills.
