12 of the Best BYOBs in Philadelphia

By

Pennsylvania has a weird and confusing liquor license system. Basically, it’s expensive to get permission to serve booze here. But like any good Philly story, we found a work around. BYOBs — i.e. restaurants where you can “Bring Your Own Bottle” of wine, beer, or sometimes even liquor — have long been a special, local experience.

These places are typically chef-driven, intimate, and staples of their neighborhood. And without a bar tab, they also make for a more affordable meal.

As Philly’s star has risen in the world of culinary accolades, some of our BYOB culture has given way to big operations with equally big bar operations. But just when it started to feel like the BYOB scene was shrinking, along came Illata, Mawn, and Tabachoy — some of the most exciting new restaurants in town.

This guide combines newbies and classics that represent the best in Philly’s BYOB culture. Cheers!
