What a year 2020 has been. With a pandemic that has forever shifted what we know about Atlanta’s restaurants, there’s plenty to hope for as we look at the year ahead – namely, that our favorite restaurants will survive. Here’s our monthly list of locally-owned businesses to support throughout Atlanta, from an Atlanta staple in Miller Union to smashburgers at Bold Monk to destination sandwiches at Cubanos.
West Midtown
Brewers John “J.R.” Roberts and Neal Engleman pride themselves on making their own beer at the Bold Monk Brewery headquarters at the intersection of Chattahoochee Avenue and Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard. But this brewery also has a standout restaurant, serving up brisket poutine, smoked bacon mussels, the double-smashed patty Monk burger, and of course a selection of those fresh brews.
West Midtown
Named after the former stockyards that are a part of Atlanta’s history, Miller Union is an Atlanta restaurant mainstay. Started under the tutelage of Steven Satterfield and Neal McCarthy in 2009, menu highlights include shrimp and fish gumbo, housemade charcuterie, buttermilk fried quail and more. Glenwood Park
At Glenwood Park’s Gunshow, Top Chef extraordinaire Chef Kevin Gillepsie translates his nostalgia for his childhood in Georgia to a communal dining experience. Menu items change weekly at Gunshow but a sample of past items include stewed goat served with red beans and crispy rice, Alabama crab and confit parsnip, and old fashioned banana pudding for dessert. Cumberland
The three Cinco Mexico Cantina locations in the metro Atlanta area serve up their beloved dishes like a signature fried calamari; chicken tortilla soup; pork carnitas flatbread; short rib tacos; and more. Order for takeout by calling 678-303-1455 or online.
Alpharetta
Under the ethos of “procuring the freshest ingredients we can find,” Alpharetta’s Restaurant Holmes prioritizes creativity and comfort in the experience they curate for diners. Berkeley Park
It’s tea time in Midtown — and Krungthep Tea Time is where you need to go. This tea bar is a new addition to Atlanta’s slew of restaurants in Midtown’s Berkeley Park neighborhood. Menu offerings include a selection of sandwiches — pesto chicken, chicken satay, grilled cheese — and jasmine, hibiscus and pomegranate green teas. Sandy Springs
Cozy in a tiny house, Cubanos ATL serves up Cuban sandwiches and Cuban coffee in Sandy Springs. Choose from three sandwiches: El Miami (pork and ham), El Tampa (pork, salami and ham), or El Pollo (chicken). Afro-Caribbean cuisine is the heart of Rock Steady, a Midtown eatery that prides itself on bringing diners a taste of the greater African diaspora.
