New on Resy: Teardrop Lounge, Huber’s Cafe, Grain and Gristle, Olympia Provisions, and More

Gino’s is no stranger to the Portland restaurant scene. The Italian stalwart has been serving homey classics made with Northwest ingredients, including Grandma Jean’s ragu over penne, pasta alle vongole, and thick-sliced ribeyes, since it opened in 1996. Allegedly, Lady Gaga once dined here on a swing through Portland, and we have no reason to doubt.

Backyard Social could be your home away from home. With a short menu of backyard barbecue classics like hickory-smoked chicken, burgers and sandwiches, paired with riffs on classic cocktails, Jell-O shots, wine and beer, it’s the perfect place to wind down an evening if you’re lacking your own outdoor space.

Best known for its lengthy menu of seasonal cocktails organized into flavor profiles, Teardrop Lounge is a must-visit destination on any cocktail tour. Drinks here, complete with prose-like descriptions, range from “bright & crisp” to “deep & dark” and pair with a menu of salty bar snacks, from spiced nuts to duck-confit toasts.

Gabriel Rucker’s newest Portland project has been a hit since the day it opened. An all-day diner-meets-French bistro, complete with top-tier wine pairings thanks to wine director Andy Fortgang, Canard’s menu is the kind you could easily wind your way through all day (though offerings have been tightened during COVID). As in: a luxurious seafood tower, decked out with a dozen oysters, the beloved oeufs mayonnaise, Dungeness crab spring rolls and more; plus foie-stuffed french toast and a bananas “foie-ster” sundae. Dinner brings some crossover, plus the must-order steam burgers. 

By now, most Portlanders know what to expect from any Olympia Provisions vehicle: extensive, cured meat-centric menus built around boards showcasing their award-winning salami and sausages. At the Southeast Division outpost, diners will find a patio-friendly version of that Alpine butcher-inspired menu, with boards, sandwiches, platters and fondue made to pair with a full lineup of Rosenstadt beers.

Portland’s oldest restaurant is still serving the old school dishes — think crab cakes, shrimp Louie, roasted turkey and glazed ham — that has made it a classic since 1879. If you haven’t made a trip to Huber’s yet for one of their skillfully made flaming Spanish coffees, can you even really call yourself a Portlander?

Sit atop the rooftop at Cuban-inspired Palomar, and you might feel like you’re on vacation. A vacation that includes rum-based classics like daiquiris (both shaken and blended) and piña coladas, other timeless cocktails, and Cuban-inspired dishes — like jackfruit ropa vieja tacos, frita Cubana sandwiches, lechon asado and shrimp ceviche.

Make sure to come early to snag a seat at this bustling patio. Beginning at 3 p.m., diners quickly fill the sunny outdoor tables, sampling more than a dozen beers by the pint, ranging from “light & fresh” to “hop forward.”

In addition to the dozen or so beers by the pint, don’t miss the classic brewpub fare: fried pickles, pretzels, sandwiches, and Detroit-style pan pizza.

Unlike many of Portland’s newer breweries, four-year-old Ancestry’s tap list stays close to the “three pillars” of styles — American, English and Belgian. Paired with an extensive menu of brewpub fare, from hearty burgers and sandwiches to fried apps, it’s a local stalwart for Tualatin that always delivers.

Co-owner Lisa Shaw, who studied at the Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana, offers individual, New York-meets-Naples style pizzas topped with fresh mozzarella, meatballs, house Bolognese, and more. 

There’s never a shortage of places to buy beer and wine in Oregon, but the massive selection here truly rivals the best: 34 taps — ranging from local wine and cider to hazy IPAs and fuzzy light beers — plus more than 800 bottles of beer and mead. Take a spin through the aisles for bottles to drink at home, or drink them there with pizza, wings, and salad.

Combining Costa Rican, Cuban, Salvadoran, Peruvian, Argentinian, and Ecuadorian flavors and influences, this is a favorite to both wine country locals and visitors. The menu offers a little bit of everything, drawn from those pan-Latin American cuisines, with smaller crunchy bites like fried cactus with chipotle aioli alongside larger plates of chile relleno and paella.

A Portland neighborhood favorite, best known for American standards like burgers, sandwiches and salads and their housemade charcuterie, all paired with an excellent local beer list. On weekends, classic brunch options reign, with Northwest-centric ingredients, like the Oregon benny with local prosciutto and Hood River apples, baked eggs with local greens and more.

Sellwood’s longstanding New American restaurant is one of those places that’s just good. The frequently changing menu here centers on dishes lamb chops with mushroom risotto and hand-cut pasta, plus suggested beer and wine pairings for each item. And don’t miss the deviled eggs with sweet pepper jelly.

In early 2020, Ataula’s Jose Chesa, his wife Cristina Baez, and longtime collaborator Emily Metivier opened this spot in downtown’s Hyatt Centric Hotel. The restaurant, which might look familiar to those who love the stunner that is Ataula, is equally glam, serving Spanish-inspired favorites for breakfast, lunch, dinner daily, along with Chesa’s beloved xurros and drinking chocolate.

This family owned, European-minded restaurant specializes in bistro-style plates, including local cheeses and cured meats, and hearty large plates like their Northwest take on cioppino, paired with regional wines and beers.
