New on Resy: Homewood, Beverley’s Bistro & Bar, Harlowe MXM

At acclaimed chef Matt McAllister’s new opening, it all begins with a farmer. Homewood plays to the tune of the seasons, offering a bona fide farm-to-table menu that is as delicious as it is approachable. Order the salad of tomatoes and plums, to start, with ricotta gnocchi and chanterelles, ember-roasted mushrooms, and lightly cured trout to follow.

There’s nothing more satisfying than a good neighborhood bistro, and Beverley’s more than delivers. Outfitted in mirrored walls, mosaic floors, and marbled tables, the stunning space recalls the classic institutions of France, and boasts a menu to match—think steak tartare and onion soup gratin, alongside tributes to chef Greg Katz’s Jewish heritage, from matzo ball soup to caviar and latkes.

It could be the sprawling rooftop patio, the swinging bar stools, or the excellent drinks, but almost everyone can agree: Harlowe MXM is Deep Ellum’s favorite drinking destination. The complex shakes up great cocktails alongside a rotating beer list and wines; best of all, the food is where Harlowe MXM really wows, with coal-fired prawn with corn pudding, crispy sambal chicken, and a brisket rib MXM burger (with optional lobster tail for good measure).

We like any establishment that takes pasta- and bread-making into its own hands. And at il Bracco Restaurant, the plates sing of Italy, where housemade focaccia, spicy gemelli, and chicken Piccata shine. Pro-tip: balmy nights call for the al fresco patio, where you’ll want to dine with a glass of Chianti in hand.

Something magical happens on Saturday nights at Petra and the Beast. It’s when chef-owner Misti Norris flexes her muscles, switching from casual plates to a dazzling tasting menu. Delight in Norris’ experiments with foraging, fermentation, and farming, from house-made charcuterie to original pasta. It’s a delicious foray into her world, where whole animal butchery and farm-to-table ethos sing.

Tradition meets modern sensibilities at Tillman’s, where Southern favorites are reimagined through a regional lens. Indeed, this Bishop Arts institution, which reads as a swanky hunter’s lodge (think mounted deer heads, dripping chandeliers, wood-paneled walls), lovingly gathers the best of Oak Cliff for a peak-season menu with a whimsical touch. We’re talking lobster corn dogs, goat cheese truffle tater tots, and beer can chicken with Dr. Pepper bbq.

It’s easy to forget you’re in Lake Highlands at RM 12:20 Bistro. And that’s because chef Erin Willis has created a gateway to France’s countryside cuisine, accented with a Southern twist. Highlights include mussels with chorizo and tomatoes to chicken paillard. Pro-tip: Tuesdays call for half-off bottles of wine (the selection is French and excellent), from 4pm to close.

Ask any Highland Park local where to get your brasserie fixing, and they’ll point you to Up On Knox. The American bistro executes refined plates within a casual setting day and night, and there’s no better place to enjoy French-leaning bistro staples, which range from trout almondine to quiche lorraine.

It can be hard to get excited over a paleo-heavy menu. Yet the fare at the Lower Greenville location of HG Sply Co surprises, dishing plates that are healthy but (taste) decadent. Case in point: smoky carrot hummus, creamy poblano-cauliflower “grits,” and cochinita nachos.

With a name like Sugarbacon, it’s no surprise that the porky products shine at this industrial chic eatery. Yet what is surprising is how the kitchen whips up its namesake, slathering smoked pork belly in an ancho-bbq sauce, resulting in a sticky-sweet cube of porky delight atop a charred piece of bread. Don’t miss out on house-made tater tots and live music on Fridays and Saturdays.

If you’re craving seafood, head straight to this Preston Hollow winner. The team at Rex’s Seafood and Market discloses a deep love for all seafaring offerings, doling out a menu with influences from around the world. Bring a group and split sashimi grade tuna nachos, tilapia and shrimp ceviche, crawfish hushpuppies, fish & chips, and Chilean sea bass with a ginger-miso glaze.

Simply put, Hero was meant for groups. The 24,000 square foot space boasts no less than five bars, 50 televisions, an old-school arcade and a sprawling patio, which makes it the ideal backdrop for everything from group sports-watching to casual al fresco dining. Pro-tip: finger foods is the way to go, and you’ll want the Parmesan kale dip, chimichurri chicken wings, and pulled pork nachos.

A cheffy catering service, Magdalena’s opens its doors on the weekend for a Supper Club pop-up unlike any other.
