Mau Miami: A Walk Through the Mediterranean Midtown

The Mediterranean vibe is alive and well at this Midtown spot, from the emerald green velvet touches and brassy hues to the La Vie en Rose cocktail. Share whipped labneh with charred maitakes and homemade pita, piri piri chicken, and bone-in pork chops with romesco cream sauce. Stay for the DJ and extra bubbly.
Pasta Miami

If you can’t tell by the name, pasta takes center stage at this Wynnwood charmer. Each twist of tagliatelle, stuffed agnolotti, and rolled pici is made by hand and on view in the open kitchen. And thanks to the chefs’ meeting in Lima (where their first restaurant lives), Peruvian influences abound.
DC PIE CO Brickell
You could come just for the pies, which have a tangy homemade sauce, three cheeses, and a crackling, brick-oven crust. (PS: Pepperoni isn’t just an afterthought; slices are also crisped up and served as a side dish.) But don’t be afraid to veer into other parts of the menu, from fresh salads to saucy chicken wings and eggplant parm.
Red South Beach Miami Beach
With sleek and sexy décor — lots of mirrored black, leather, and pops of red — Red South Beach offers a contemporary steakhouse vibe. Expect chilled martinis, oysters, iceberg wedge salads, and any steak cooked just the way you like it. Just know the truffle pasta is known to knocks people’s socks off.
Havana Vieja Miami Beach
In a city with no shortage of Cuban restaurants, this homey place, with its walls covered in photos and posters evoking Cuba’s capital in bygone days, stands out for its delectable specialties, from Abuela’s toston breakfast to housemade empanadas and classic ropa vieja — plus eight different mojitos and rum-based margaritas.
MC Kitchen Miami Design District
After over a decade, this pioneering Design District spot still delivers fresh, modern Italian dishes in a stylish space. Simplicity shines through everything: ahi tuna crudo with grapefruit, fennel, and crispy quinoa; mini fig pizzas or Brussels sprouts and truffle pizzas; handmade pastas; and thick rib eyes or honey-glazed pork chops grilled to perfection. Brunch is still a city standout.
Il Pastaiolo Miami Beach
The calling card at this longtime Miami Beach favorite is housemade pasta, from ravioli to spaghetti — including a trademark fettuccine cacio e pepe finished tableside in a hollowed-out wheel of pecorino romano. But don’t neglect the showcase main dishes, like the shareable specialty of whole butterflied branzino with grilled lobster and giant red shrimp.
La Ventana Miami Beach
Because for more than a decade, La Ventana has been serving Miami Beach the best of Colombian cuisine. Pro tip: Follow the chef’s recommendations and start with “Mi Tierra” (an appetizer plate with a taste of almost everything), followed by a mixed grill or mixed seafood platter for two.
Mama’s Tacos Miami Beach
True to its name, the tacos at this vibrant Miami Beach spot are something else — think four seafood variations and a steak-and-cheese signature called La Rosa de Guadalupe — but know that Mama’s also offers burritos, quesadillas, fajitas, and other south-of-the-border dishes.
Esquina Cubana Miami Beach
In the light-flooded dining room or on the breezy covered terrace, this super-hospitable corner of Cuba-in-Miami does a bang-up job with all the specialties you know and love, including lechón asado, two kinds of paella, and a Cuban sandwich that defines the genre. That’s Amore Miami Beach
You might think you’re in some fashionable Milanese trattoria when you step inside this bustling South Beach spot, and the food — including an abundance of pasta, pizza, and meat and seafood dishes — will double down on that impression. Special occasion? Get the Terra e Mare combo for two, a 16-ounce cowboy steak plus grilled lobster and octopus.
Don Sombrero Miami Beach
With vintage signs and artifacts covering every inch of wall; a multi-colored bar dispensing tequila, mezcal, and numerous margaritas; sidewalk seating for great people-watching on Collins Avenue; and a menu offering almost any Mexican standard you can imagine … You know Don Sombrero is going to be fun.
Osteria Positano Miami Beach
With its postcard setting of white-washed walls, bright yellow lemons, and bougainvillea everywhere, Osteria Positano might just remind you of the Amalfi Coast. Think of places where cacio e pepe is tossed in a cheese wheel, and where individual tiramisu is made just for you at the table. Creamy carbonara gilded with burrata and truffles might seem over the top — until that first bite.
Kiki on the River Miami River
Blink and you might think you’re somewhere in the Greek isles, but Kiki’s colorful, eclectic dining room and bougainvillea-lined terrace are right on the Miami River. The party vibes fill every inch of the place, whether you’re there for pitchers of mojitos and smoked salmon towers at brunch or an array of spreads, salads, and pasta platters at night.
MILA Miami Beach
A South Beach stunner in every sense, from the show-stopping outdoor terrace complete with cabanas and a water feature (don’t attempt walking across the floating stones, especially after cocktails) to the sizzling dining room. Mediterranean and Asian elements come together in surprising ways, like snapper crudo with tom yum vinaigrette.
Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink Miami Design District
It might be the restaurant that launched Michael Schwartz’s empire and planted a seed for what the Design District would become, but it’s still one of the best places in town for simple, honest food and hospitality to match. P.S.: The Genuine prix fixe ($49 for three courses) makes it accessible for all.
Flora Plant Kitchen Miami
Because the Latin-inspired plant-based dishes elevate the whole idea of vegetarian dining here. Charcoal-grilled corn elotes with chipotle guava aioli, veggie burgers with oozing sunny-side-up eggs, and shakshuka with arepas are just the start. The whole vibe is colorful and natural, just the place for whiling away over a long brunch or healthful-leaning breakfast.
Kalypso Beach Miami Beach
This is a light and breezy pool-and-beachside spot for casual bites just off the sand. Whether it’s branzino or a burger, something chilled or fish and chips, it’s a great way to take a shade break when you need it.
The Surf Club Restaurant Surfside
Dress up and pretend you’re a 1950s movie star for a night, which is exactly how you’ll be treated no matter who you are. Because this is a Thomas Keller experience, hospitality is an art form here. You’ll feel it from the moment you walk in, through martinis, the tableside Caesar, and the very last bites of that exquisite beef Wellington and ice cream sundae.
Ocean Bistro Miami Beach
The Art Deco Cavalier Hotel’s all-day restaurant is located right on Ocean Drive, with patio seats prime for people-watching. The menu caters to all tastes, with an emphasis on seafood, so anything from paella to pasta and pizza.
Branja Buena Vista
It’s hard to pass up a purple margarita-ish cocktail rimmed with za’atar, especially since it’s called a Purple Rain. That’s just one thing that sets the tone for this lively Buena Vista spot. The tall ceilings, indoor-outdoor flow, stained glass, and lush foliage create a fantastic backdrop for innovative Israeli dishes. Brunch is a blast.
THE B1OOM Downtown Miami
Because this is where traditional Ecuadorian cuisine is turned on its head. Set inside The Bloom food hall, you’ll find flavors not easy to find in Miami — things like seco de pollo, a chicken and plantain-stuffed pasta in a rich beer sauce and topped with cheese; and a riff on tres leches cake served with Amazonian vanilla ice cream. Go with friends, order everything.
Carnicero Steakhouse West Flagler
A steakhouse with Latin and Spanish flair, Carnicero is the kind of place where you’ll find ceviche with leche de tigre and aji amarillo alongside traditional shrimp cocktail, steak empanadas, and spit-roasted meats. The Basque cheese tart is the only way to end.
La Locanda Miami Beach
Proving you don’t need a lot of flash — just really good food — to keep regulars happy, this South Beach stalwart never fails. Homemade pastas, charred bubble-rimmed pizzas from the brick oven, red sauce with just the right amount of balance — it’s hard to go wrong here.
Jass Kitchen Buena Vista
In a town bursting at the seams with big and boisterous scenes, sometimes you just want to settle in for a candlelight dinner with a jazzy background. Stuffed grape leaves, muhammara, lamb kebabs and fragrant jasmine rice, and clay-baked branzino are just a few hits.
Lulu in the Grove Coconut Grove
This Coconut Grove favorite always had international flair, but its latest incarnation leans heavily on Spain, with French, Mediterranean, and Miami touches throughout. You’ll see it in every dish, from the marinated olives and grapes or beetroot rolls to the pastas and whole branzino. The cocktails bring it all together.
Bondi Sushi – Midtown Miami Midtown Miami
Like the South Beach outpost (and original New York locations), those who know sushi know to come here for well-priced specials, great bento box options, and omakase featuring fresh, sustainably sourced catches. Pro tip: Everyone talks about the crispy rice selections for a reason.
Motek Miami Beach Miami Beach
Like the other Motek locations, this South of Fifth outpost is the perfect place for all-day brunch, especially when shakshuka and various mezze are involved. The Arayes burger (beef kofta kebabs stuffed into a soft pita with tahini and harissa) tastes even better in larger indoor and outdoor digs with a cocktail by its side.
Issabella’s Miami Beach
If cruising around the Mediterranean isn’t in the cards, a night at this Lincoln Road spot makes a good stand-in. Filled with Aegean blues, marble, and warm wood accents, it’s just right for sharing, well, everything: dips and laffa bread, spicy Calabrian cream penne, steamed mussels, and chicken skewers. Spritzes all around for everyone!
