The January Hit List: Asta, Turenne, Eventide Fenway, Celeste, and More

After months of take-out only, Asta is once again serving its six-course tasting menu indoors. You’ll choose from either a “vegetarian” or “omnivore” menu, both of which change frequently; the former may include smoked Badger Flame beets with ricotta, or chicken mushroom with rhubarb, while the latter could feature squid in bacon broth with brussels sprouts, or duck with radicchio and purple cabbage. In addition, Asta continues to offer family-style take-home dinners between Wednesday and Saturday, which must be ordered by 2 p.m. the day of.

While T&B Pizza hibernates, the owners have temporarily replaced it with Turenne, a French-style café and bakery that specializes in wood-fired Montreal bagels. Stop by for said bagels schmeared with Périgord black-truffle cream cheese or topped by beet-cured salmon gravlax, or even bagel sandwiches stuffed with the likes of housemade kielbasa, fried eggs and Gouda. Non-bagel offerings include salted pretzel croissants or wood-roasted squash salads, and entire set meals paired to wine are offered to-go each Friday and Saturday.

Eventide Fenway has shifted into takeout and delivery only mode for the winter, but they’ve added a new wrinkle to their operation with the launch of XO Burgers & Wings. Don’t worry, you can still order a brown-butter lobster roll — and everything else from Eventide’s menu — but the simultaneously operating XO offers dry-aged beef burgers, topped with XO mayo and banana peppers or pimento cheese and bread and butter pickles, plus wings by the half-dozen, dozen, or 50-count in flavors like koji-fermented “buffalo-ish” sauce, garlic butter, and rose-petal harissa.

The team behind Brewer’s Fork has expanded their Charlestown footprint with Dovetail, which exists as a standalone restaurant and attached sandwich shop inside a historical Navy Yard building. On the restaurant side, you might encounter chicken-fried quail with aged soy barbecue sauce, pear agnolotti with almond pesto, and pan-seared trout with a black garlic emulsion, while drinking any of the 15 wines poured by the glass. But if you go the shop route, expect to pick up slow-roasted porchetta with salsa verde on ciabatta, or “The 4-Way,” their take on the North Shore classic that tops rare roast beef with poblano peppers, onions, cheddar fundido, garlic aioli and fried shallots on an Italian sub roll.

The seafood-focused newcomer now offers two distinct experiences. Claim a seat indoors or on their patio for a four-course tasting menu with optional cocktail pairings, or go the takeout route to pick up one of their new “adult happy meals,” which bundles unagi grilled cheeses, oyster Rockefeller pies, and Japanese fried-chicken sandwiches with either steak fries or salad, and a beer or cocktail.

The boundary-pushing Cambridge trattoria is leaning into its Italian roots with a “Sunday Supper” menu that will be served throughout winter. Just don’t expect it to be the same Sunday fare you’d get from Grandma: Pammy’s is keeping red sauce funky — with sesame garlic knots, lumache Bolognese with gochujang, and eggplant Parm with umami marinara.

Burro Bar South End is rocking its outdoor patio deep into winter, providing a covered refuge for all your margarita-sipping, taco-consuming needs. Of particular interest in each category: a cranberry-ginger margarita made with ginger liqueur and a cranberry and ginger reduction, and roasted beet and sweet potato tacos covered by goat cheese sauce and spiced pepitas.

The Union Square Peruvian spot has fortified its patio with heaters, which will provide vital warmth as you avail yourself of blue cod ceviche, and seared scallops with squid-ink fettucine. Or, for an extra hit of warmth, consider one of Celeste’s warming stews such as black mint stew with squash fava beans and potato, or the Inca stew prepared with chicken, pork, peanuts, potato and Port.

After ending its dine-in service at the close of November, Banyan is back as a takeout and delivery operation. Consider this great news if you’ve ever wanted to have brussels sprouts okonomiyaki, miso mac & cheese, and squash ramen kits on speed-dial. Also of note: Banyan’s pork or vegetable dumplings can be ordered by the 20-, 40-, or 60-count, and come complete with dumpling dipping sauce, red curry aioli, and mango chili sauce.

Waypoint’s seafood-focused, Italian-inspired fare might just be the antidote to full-on New England winter. Cases in point include chopped-clam pizzas with pecorino, uni bucatini with smoked egg yolk, and New York strip steak frites covered in gremolata.
