New on Resy: Saint John, Jewel of the South, Mister Mao, and More

Following up on Gris-Gris, his smash hit modern Southern restaurant, chef Eric Cook looks to the past for inspiration at this French Quarter destination, where the fare is inspired by authentic Creole cuisine of earlier times. Stained glass art and a 3D mural paying tribute to famed New Orleans chefs help set the stage for dishes like seared gulf fish court bouillon and Hoppin’ John oyster salad.

An assortment of ceviches, cross-cultural tapas, and fresh Gulf seafood are on the menu at this exuberantly colorful Arts District trendsetter from chef Nanyo Dominguez (Johnny Sanchez, Espíritu Mezcaleria). Worth investigating: Bésame’s array of hard-to-find rums, mezcals, and Latin American brandies.

This self-proclaimed “tropical roadhouse” from chef Sophina Uong and her husband, William “Wildcat” Greenwell, is exactly that, plus killer cocktails and unforgettable dishes that meld the flavors of Southeast Asia, India, and Mexico all together.

Borrowing its name from an influential 1850s-vintage bar in the Central Business District, this pub-like tavern (with patio) occupies an old brick Creole cottage in the French Quarter, where well-known local bartenders Nick Detrich and Chris Hannah serve up cocktails both classic and contemporary. London-born chef Philip Whitmarsh (Compère Lapin) runs the kitchen.

Jamaican chef Charles Blake and his New Orleans-born wife, Lauren, have good news for fans of their popular food stall at Pythian Market: their new two-level Uptown restaurant expands on the theme with a larger menu (think roasted beef short ribs and whole red snapper) and two bars — one is dedicated to Jamaica’s signature spirit, rum.

Marjie’s Grill’s Caitlin Carney and Marcus Jacobs’ long-awaited seafood emporium, featured Louisiana oysters in several guises, wild-caught catfish, and a don’t-miss-it Boil Pot with shrimp, blue crab, corn, and red potatoes tossed in chile butter.

It started with a series of pop-ups around New Orleans, and now look at what Tyler Stuart and Merritt Coscia have created: a homestyle restaurant with extravagant murals on the walls and a tandoor oven in the kitchen, serving a small, largely vegetarian menu of unusual regional dishes from all over India.

You’ll definitely want to try Annadele’s signature dish — a savory onion and smoked shrimp cheesecake — but the menu at this historic early 19th century Covington estate (which was never an actual plantation) offers plenty of other Creole-style specialties as well. Pro tip: Indulge yourself after dinner and stay the night in one of the four B&B rooms upstairs.
