New on Resy: Brezza Cucina, Miller Union, Garden & Gun Club

In typical Jonathan Waxman fashion, Brezza feels right at home. 90-year-old wood floors, oversized structural columns, and monolithic metal frames frame the backdrop to Waxman’s delicious version of California-inspired Italian cuisine. The menu recalls New American and Italian influences, while incorporating bold Southern flavors. Simply roasted fish and pizzas are complemented by signature staples, like his gnocchi, JW chicken, and kale salad.

Miller Union is named after the Miller Union Stockyards that once occupied a full city block in Atlanta’s meatpacking district in the 1880s. Located inside a refurbished warehouse, the restaurant was founded in 2009 by Steven Satterfield and Neal McCarthy, and has since contributed to the evolution of the neighborhood. Contemporary Southern cuisine means fritters made with grits and country ham, field pea ravioli, and house-made sausage with grilled beans, shishito, and tomato conserva.

Garden & Gun’s premier restaurant brings the iconic Southern lifestyle brand to life with next-level service and a curated menu of elevated classics. Enjoy a vast and creative menu of drinks and spirits—including a dedicated bourbon and amaro service—as well as dishes from the James Beard Award-winning culinary team behind FIG and The Ordinary (Charleston, South Carolina). In chef Mike Lata’s words, “We’ve taken cues from iconic staples and applied a no-nonsense approach to crafting these dishes with great ingredients, careful technique, and a fresh perspective. The outcome is pretty damn delicious.”

The Alden, conceived by chef Jared A. Hucks, leverages terroir, tradition, and innovation to create an expressive dining experience. Located at Chamblee’s Parkview on Peachtree, “Alden” means “old friend” in Old English—a nod to the convivial feeling of the intimate space, which boasts an open kitchen as its focal point. Fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced locally and regionally are the building blocks for the chef’s cuisine, which encompasses culturally-influenced mainstays like house focaccia; basil-cured, steamed Atlantic salmon with onion marmalade, thyme-based beetroot, and shiitake consommé; and bourbon-banana pudding.

Over in Athens, The Expat is a neighborhood bistro with a French accent. The chef, Savannah Sasser, uses her culinary chops to make magic out of high-quality products from the surrounding area (think gnudi with rabbit ragout and whole fish served on polenta, charred eggplant, and sauce vierge). Owners Krista and Jerry Slater lead a staff that places emphasis on gracious service, while the cocktail program should not be overlooked. Speaking of, not-so-hidden in The Expat is Upstairs, an evening-only lounge for those that love vinyl records and serious drinks.

Originally a family-owned drugstore, City Pharmacy is run by a collaboration of farmers, artisans, chefs, and mixologists intent on expanding the culinary horizon of Covington in an authentic way. The menu focuses on reimagined classics, highlighting dishes like watermelon salad with blood orange reduction, candied peanuts, mint granita, and feta. Finally, the thoughtful bar program offers cocktails across four distinct categories: shaken, stirred, fountain, and parlour.

Reclaimed woods, antique typewriters, and a cozy bar set the scene for 1Kept. The Southern, New American fare spans from chicken schnitzel and herb spätzle to a smoked pimento cheese board. Here, cocktails are house-infused, like the “Kicked by the Mule” made of vodka, fresh ginger, and fresh limes—which seeps for 36 hours, at one drip per second.
