San Francisco’s Newest Restaurant Openings, Now on Resy

One of the most anticipated restaurants in San Francisco this year is Copra, the blockbuster offering from Srijith “Sri” Gopinathan and Ayesha Thapar. The two, who also own Ettan in Palo Alto, have transformed the former Dosa on Fillmore into an homage to the coastal cuisines of India’s southern states. It’s a thrilling return to the city for Gopinathan, who was last seen in San Francisco earning two Michelin stars at Campton Place, and now gets to celebrate his home state of Kerala.

In many connoisseurs’ eyes, Annie Ho’s Hong Kong Lounge II was one of the city’s top destinations for Chinese food prior to a crippling fire. Now, it’s risen from ashes anew as HK Lounge Bistro, with a new SoMa address, serving its signature dim sum and Hong Kong-style Cantonese food. Don’t be surprised to see it skyrocket back atop the must-visit lists.

After one bite of chef Paul Iglesias’ posta negra — a beef short rib braised in cola and panela — you’ll realize how glad you are to have a new local spot for Colombian food. Contemporary but rooted in tradition, Parche packs a wallop of flavor and vibes in a colorful space that feels like a party. And it kind of is, especially when dining with a group, so you can share everything on the menu.

After hitting with Khamsa in the Mission, the same family extends its reach with the Morocco-meets-California flavors L’Mida. The decorative space is transportative, as is the food: flatbreads from the oven, aromatic tagine, and grilled whole fish with homemade harissa. Order a lot, bring friends, and commiserate over mint tea.

Like its sibling Kaiyo, it’s hard to focus on anything other than the stunning wrap-around views from Cavaña’s 17-story perch. But the cocktails and dishes, all tinged with Latin and South American influences, will pull your attention away for a few moments. Think: flaky pastels stuffed with Brazilian braised beef, cool aguachiles, low-intervention wines from Mexico, and a milk punch made with Bolivian brandy and hoja santa.

The menu at this cozy corner Nob Hill charmer belies its modest decor. Taking cues from his Emilia-Romagna upbringing, chef GianMarco Cosmi creates ethereal pasta dishes, like ravioli carbonara with pecorino foam and passatelli with porcini mushrooms, among a smattering of antipasti. Don’t leave without at least one bite of panna cotta.

Although inspired by Taiwanese night markets, this isn’t solely Taiwanese food. Instead chef Chris Yang does wondrous things with whole animal butchery and locally sourced produce. The melting pot of flavors — things like pork ribs with miso glaze and koji mayo, or honey walnut shrimp and pork toast — outsize the small space, making this one of the month’s most exciting debuts.

Set at One Maritime Plaza, Bar Sprezzatura brings the aperitivo traditions to downtown San Francisco, courtesy of local bar pro Carlo Splendorini and TableOne Hospitality, the new restaurant group from Michael Mina and Patric Yumul. Here, you’ll find a full menu of ciccheti — Venetian-inspired savor snacks — and expertly made cocktails, like Mr. Vespa (mezcal, gin, gentian, limoncello, and thyme olive oil).

Right off the corner of 18th and Valencia, a new group of industry vets have resurrected the old Luna Park space as a fresh concept named Luna. Dubbed as an American brasserie, you’ll find something for everyone here, but don’t miss the creative cocktails, many available by the pitcher.

Welcome back to one of the city’s pioneering Thai restaurants, and one of its top restaurants overall. Kin Khao is newly reopened, with many of its hits back on the menu, from the nam tok beans to the pretty hot wings.

The revolutionary bar and restaurant is back in an entirely new space, and with its singular combination of cocktails, food and vibes, it’s already one of the most noteworthy newcomers in the city. The drinks program remains unmatched in its celebration of producers and single-origin spirits — and new in this iteration is that you can buy bottles on site as well.

From the same team behind Novato’s Boca Pizzeria, Mamita celebrates the flavors of Oaxaca, from the chiles and spices for the mole coloradito to the wood-fired carne asada and vegetables tucked into tacos and tortas. Craving a margarita? A Tequila cart will bring the spirits right to your table.

You’ve seen the lines outside this sleek handroll specialist from the team behind Hina Yakitori and the Michelin-starred Ju-Ni. Now you can make a Resy and get your seat reserved. Order a set of five, seven, or 10 rolls — or improvise your own selection from the à la carte menu.

This is no mere hotel restaurant. Led by a team of Mina Group vets and a chef who worked with heavyweights like Alain Ducasse and Guy Savoy, it’s a smart and sleek neighborhood French brasserie for the SoMa crowd. Expect beautiful renditions of classics like moules frites, French onion soup under the requisite blanket of cheese (and sided by an oxtail ragu-filled marrow bone), and more. The bar beckons a cocktail; don’t miss the Monsieur Lapin, a garden-filled Tequila number that goes down too easily.

Maybeck’s is back. The Marina showstopper reopened a few weeks ago, and is going live on Resy later this month, with several very new and notable updates —  namely that Lori Baker and Jeffrey Banker (the wife-and-husband chefs behind the much-missed Baker & Banker) are aboard alongside chef-owner Aaron Toensing. Deep teal green hues and the copper-topped bar create just the right vibe, whether it’s for baby beet lasagna, a smashburger or the Wednesday-only beef Wellington for two.

The Ho family closed their popular Vietnamese-French Bodega Bistro in 2017, but now it’s back (with a slightly different name) and it’s just as excellent as you might remember, serving shareable appetizers, phở in several variations, and a Bodega signature — bún chả pork-belly meatballs.

The Pacific Heights corner of Fillmore and California is now home to Pinsa Rossa, which specializes in — you guessed it — pinsa, the Roman-style pizza sweeping San Francisco.

Red Window opened in 2021 in the heart of North Beach on Columbus Avenue. Unlike the sea of surrounding Italian spots, this is a vibrant Spanish restaurant decked out in beautiful murals, with some excellent low-ABV cocktails to boot.

The art in eating a handroll is not letting it sit too long so the rice doesn’t make the nori too soft. That’s just one nugget of knowledge that will help dining at this Oakland spot from Kyle Itani (of Itani Ramen Nikkei Sushi, and Hopscotch). The vibe is super casual and the room is all 90s hip-hop, neon, and cool pop art.

You’ll definitely want to visit the reincarnation of this longtime Union Square favorite, now ensconced in the historic Presidio Officers’ Club, where the central Mexican fare includes dishes both familiar (queso fundido) and less so (shrimp in tamarind mole). Pro tip: Score a seat on the patio and watch tortillas being made to order.

Bring a crowd to the Marina iteration of Gianluca Legrottaglie’s trend-setting “pinseria” mini-chain — serving pinsa, the hand-formed, lighter-than-Neapolitan oval Roman variation on pizza, cut into pieces that are easy to share.

Oakland favorite Nido has scrambled the letters in its name and reemerged as Odin, where chef Devin Gonzalez (Tacos El Precioso) creates the vegetable-forward menu (think mushroom ceviche) and an abundance of mezcal and Tequila fuels the fun.
