The trick is to go explore every new menu at Trick Dog, now a decade old. The revolutionary bar and restaurant is back in an entirely new space, and with its singular combination of cocktails, food and vibes, it’s already one of the most noteworthy newcomers in the city. The drinks program remains unmatched in its celebration of producers and single-origin spirits — and new in this iteration is that you can buy bottles on site as well.

Liholiho Yacht Club is back and better than ever. The beloved Sutter Street spot has reopened anew, welcoming diners inside its refreshed space for the first time in years. The heritage-driven menu is similarly familiar but updated (poppy seed buns are back, but with housemade spam inside now), with lots of new menu items.

Packed tables, a soaring ceiling, and an always-bustling room are just some of the hallmarks of this Fillmore staple. Chef Matthew Accarrino and his seasonally changing menus are the rest. Go many times to ensure tasting all the antipasti, pastas (they change often, but hope for the rabbit lasagna), and delightful desserts.

Even with a few changes from new ownership, the Outer Sunset go-to remains a beloved neighborhood destination for brunch, but also dinner, which deserves a second look. Seasonality is a hallmark of the menu, plus gorgeous breads that demand taking a loaf home. The wood-paneled bar is particularly cozy at night, and cocktails are mandatory.

This is for when you want to dine with about a dozen of what will eventually be your new best friends, in front of two chefs, in a Mission tasting menu mecca. The menu changes almost weekly, with a nod to South American cuisines, but loosely translated — i.e. you’ll always get an arepa for the second course of four. Everything else just flows, including the fun, because this laid-back experience won’t break your budget, but will deliver big on its own unique style.

There’s a reason every table has dips and warm flatbread straight from the massive wood-burning oven — it’s the only way to start a meal at this airy and industrial-chic SOMA spot. From the team behind Lomka, Daniel Gribble’s menu starts in Turkey but lands firmly in California, so things like butter-poached shrimp wrapped in shredded kadaif and smoked lamb chops feel right. No one would be surprised if you went solely for the Turkish donuts and coffee.

This is not your typical tasting menu restaurant, and that’s what makes it special. The decor might include mismatched chairs, campy paintings, and a paint-spattered floor, but the dozen or so mostly Mexican- or Southern-accented courses served by chef-owner Imana (one name only) definitely aspire to Michelin-stardom.
