Veranda’s George Mendes Shares His Favorite New York Spots for Some Down Time

Where do chefs go and, more importantly, where do they love to eat? In Resy Regulars, we ask Resy chefs to tell us where they’re regulars.

Chef George Mendes first made a name for himself as the chef and owner of Aldea and Lupulo, where he drew inspiration from his Portuguese heritage with buttery egg tarts and crispy pig’s ears. Lupulo closed in 2017 and, at the height of the pandemic, Mendes closed Aldea after a 10-year run.

The following year, Mendes became executive chef and partner at Veranda, located on a lush outdoor deck inside the ModernHaus hotel, working alongside serial restaurateur, David Rabin. The menu at Veranda is global — you’ll find chickpea miso, grilled naan, and burrata — but traces of Mendes’ Portuguese cooking influences remain: He coats his charcoal-grilled chicken in piri piri sauce and serves salted cod croquettes with a smoked paprika mayo.

When Mendes has the rare moment to sit back and enjoy a meal out (he and his wife are parents to a toddler), he loves heading to a few favorites in his back pocket.

Here’s a look at how he’d spend a day off from Veranda, and all the places where he’d like to call himself a regular, if his schedule allows for it.
