Chefs and owners Kristina Liedags Compton and Rachel Sillcocks want to change your expectations about what breakfast can be with their playful menu of new breakfast favorites — all set in an equally charming space. Think celery root cakes inspired by dim sum turnip cakes, a savory chicken porridge with hominy, and and “avocado toast” with crispy sweet potato tempura. Pro tip: You don’t want to miss the brunch tasting menu served on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday nights.

A favorite in Uptown Oakland, Mockingbird is that spot you want to return to again and again for the rustic, comforting fare inspired by Italy, and the warm, inviting ambience. Pro tip: Do not sleep on the semi-famous fried brussels sprouts.

Casual, fast, abundant, delicious — those are the keywords at this lively Marina favorite, featuring updated takes on traditional Vietnamese street food. There’s phở, of course, in several variations, but also plenty of rice dishes, sandwiches, spring rolls, “beer food,” and more.

Here’s an East Bay essential: an artifact-filled destination restaurant (there seem to be a million things hanging from the ceiling alone) overlooking the Carquinez Strait from the proprietors of such San Francisco standbys as Salito’s and The Stinking Rose. Dungeness crab in many guises and assorted cuts of prime rib form the bulk of the menu.

The West Coast’s justly celebrated Dungeness crab is the thing at this sister restaurant to The Dead Fish in Crockett (and several other Bay Area standbys), installed in a prime waterside location (formerly Paradise Bay). Spain comes to the Mission District at this cozy tapas and wine bar, featuring patatas bravas, serrano ham or mushroom croquettes, and seafood paella. On a day when Carl (the fog) rolls in, or on a chilly SF night, their delightful heated patio is a definite plus.

If you like Italian food — and who doesn’t? — this is definitely one for your hit list. The Umbrian town of Norcia is so well-known for its cured meats that “norcino” has come to mean a pork butcher. Here, chef-owner Kaitlynn Bauman (Greens, Cotogna) gives the term her own twist and offers up a menu of innovative small plates, pastas, pizzas, and main dishes, often (though not always) with pork involved.

Chef Jared Rogers (Picco) and beverage director Dustin Sullivan (Lord George) collaborate at this handsome Marin County restaurant — think light brown leather banquettes, a concrete bar, leafy gray-and-white patterned wallpaper — featuring American fare (plus pasta) based on locally sourced seasonal ingredients.

Cosecha’s chef Dominica Rice-Cisneros is back with this bright, buzzy hot spot in a former fire station in the city’s Dimond District (“bombera” is Spanish for female firefighter). Pro tip: Don’t miss the roast chicken marinated with garlic and lime.

Decorative tiles, contemporary-style seating, warm lighting, and (not surprisingly) an inviting garden patio set the scene for the Argentinean and Italian specialties (think empanadas and housemade pasta) at this friendly establishment run by husband-and-wife team German Carlucci and Yanina Calamari.
