New on Resy: Falansai, Gage & Tollner, Market Table, Sona, and More

This storied Brooklyn landmark went through hell and back to get to where it is now. And it was well worth the effort, and the wait. Gage & Tollner shines just as bright as it did more than 100 years ago, thanks to a revamped menu that pulls from its chophouse and oyster bar past and a complete restoration of its glitzy Victorian fixtures. Throw in a trio of respected industry vets and know this: You’re in very good hands.

Because when a Blue Hill at Stone Barns alum takes over a trusted Vietnamese staple, sparks fly. Under new chef and owner Eric Tran, Falansai turns heads with an electric array of Vietnamese American dishes that highlight fermentation, house-made charcuterie, and local purveyors. Pro tip: Every meal should begin with the confit duck necks.

Because executive chef Shenarri “Greens” Freeman has accomplished the seemingly impossible: a next-level Southern and soul food vegan concept. As part of Ravi DeRossi’s Overthrow Hospitality revamp, Cadence is the culmination of Freeman’s love affair with plant-based cuisine, and her plates — smoked grits, jerk mac and cheese, and the usual suspects — are something else.

Taking its cues from 1930s Mumbai, Sona is a lavish and stunning space with the menu to match (read: crab puri topped with caviar). But it’s not just timeless Indian fare that’s being celebrated here — there’s also a Goan fish curry in honor of Floyd Cardoz, a nostalgic wink to the butter chicken of a cherished Texas family restaurant, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ tweaked childhood favorites (yes, she’s backing the restaurant).

If  you trace the origins of the Vongerichten empire, it all leads back to JoJo. JGV’s first restaurant (and his mother’s pet name for him), JoJo rocked the dining scene with its accessible French fare in 1991, reopened with a fresh glossy look, and is still the place for any and all Jean-Georges hits — like the Peekytoe crab dumplings, which,  if on the menu,  are  required eating.

Tomiño sings of the coastal Spanish town it’s named after, and the three brothers behind this Galician restaurant intend to do their hometown proud. You’ll want to order heavily from the tapas section of the menu: The croquetas and runny tortilla de Betanzos are executed to the nines, earning this spot a Michelin nod.

Bricolage wears its name well: With its lush backyard full of repurposed wood, plants, and vintage TVs, this Park Slope haunt does DIY well. So yes, this is one of the most coveted patios around, but it only plays second to what’s coming out of the kitchen: Vivid Vietnamese fare from a team that came out of San Francisco’s notorious Slanted Door. Pro tip: The summer rolls are required eating, especially on the patio if you can swing it.

Throw together a pair of industry vets and a wood-burning oven, and what do you get? You get Victor, the neighborhood’s new favorite hangout. Dressed up in hot pink walls, Victor draws from the Mediterranean for its bright and zippy plates (the smoked paprika prawns and Basque cheesecake are must-orders), rounded out by natural wine and hyper-local beers (as in, made-in-Gowanus local).

Because  Market Table’s  been doing farm-to-table before it was cool, and it still packs a punch.  Picture  a corner  restaurant  with  an open kitchen  and  warm  service,  huge  windows that let  the sun in  during the  day  and  Village  life  at  night, and an always-changing menu that extols the greenmarket’s best — courtesy of industry vets Mike Price and Joey Campanaro.

Because The Edge is a story about community. Black-owned and built with the Harlem Renaissance and locals in mind, The Edge is a cozy corner fixture where two sisters pull from their Jamaican and British roots for one-flavor packed menu. The jerk chicken Caesar is a non-negotiable, and so is brunch, served on the daily under the watchful gaze of Langston Hughes (or his portrait, that is).

Ever heard of duck lasagna? Neither had we until Josh Capon put it on the menu of Bowery Meat Company. A steakhouse for the modern day, this inviting temple to meat is up there with the Lugers and the Keens of the world, despite not having a century’s worth of history — which speaks volumes for the cuts and service it provides. Do order the lasagna, and know that whatever steak you get, you can’t go wrong.

Because Chinatown’s not-so-secret-anymore speakeasy still shines. Tucked along the curve of Doyers Street, Apotheke is a stunning drinking haven with a pharmaceutical bend, where the impressive cocktails are here to cheekily cure what ails you.

There’s a little bit more soul in the Flatiron District thanks to Mista Oh. Two siblings and their father are behind this little Korean gem, where family recipes abound and are executed with a lot of care. One bite into the kimchi jjigae and you’ll know: This is as close to homecooked as you can get.

When the Fort Greene crowd craves tapas, they go to Olea. A proper neighborhood standby since 2005, this Mediterranean spot has the kind of attentive service, charming digs, and shareable plates that’ll entice you to visit time and again. Pro tip: Don’t sleep on the dips; the tzatziki is stellar.

Because after wowing diners at kaiseki destination Hirohisa, chef Hayashi is turning his attention to the space next door. More specifically, a sleek L-shaped sushi counter serving the kind of pressed sushi favored in Kyoto, with the same dedication to peak-season ingredients expressed at Hirohisa. Simply put: This is one exceptional omakase spot.

Because leading someone into The Garret remains one of the neatest little tricks in the city’s playbook. A speakeasy bar hidden inside a Five Guys? Only in New York. Pro tip: Bring a bag of fries up for good measure.

Spotted on a short strip of Mott Street: The perpetually packed Balzem, where the craveable Mediterranean-inspired menu (the grilled flatbreads are known favorites) is served with a serious side of people-watching. If you’re going to go all-in on Japan’s prized cattle, go straight to the source. And J-Spec does just that. Owned by the East Coast’s ultimate wagyu suppliers — whose clientèle includes Cote and Atomix among others — this spiffy East Village spot doles out A5-grade steaks without a too-hefty price tag.

It’s hard not to envy the residents of Murray Hill when you see Banc Cafe. With soaring ceilings, a sprawling patio, and a private whiskey den set inside the building’s old vault (Banc was a bank in a previous life), the cafe emulates old-school Paris and dishes the kind of brunch staples and happy hours a neighborhood relies on.

What may seem like a tiny and narrow bar at first may actually be the West Village’s best-kept drinking spot. Moody and intimate, Entwine is the sort of place that gathers a local crowd, happily sipping cocktails and wines to the tune of a scratchy records. You’ll want to order the spicy oven-baked “dirty potatoes” — they’re one of the best drinking snacks around.

When you’re set in the old Max Fish space, you better live up to it, and the Orchard Room aims to be just as much of a LES hotspot thanks to live DJ sets, inventive cocktails, and playful dim sum (read: General Tso’s dumplings and scallion pancake panini) — outdoor bungalows included.

Tucked away on East Houston, Writing On The Wall is a vibey lounge where a host of pan-Asian plates — especially the pork shumai — are fuel to dance the night away. Live DJ sets and bottle service included.
