New on Resy: Golden Diner, Torien, Verōnika

Golden Diner isn’t your typical greasy spoon: Momofuku alum Samuel Yoo whips up diner classics — behind a counter lined with swivel stools — like you wouldn’t believe. He takes BEC to new heights with a sesame scallion milk bun, studs club sandwich triangles with chicken katsu, and dishes a wontonini en brodo that’s a slurp to behold. Free coffee refills included.

Get ready to rethink chicken. A Japanese legend has descended upon the New York dining scene, and he’s bringing yakitori in 13 courses. Yoshiteru Ikegawa — of Tokyo’s iconic Torishiki — uses a binchotan charcoal grill straight out of Japan to carefully cook everything from the neck skin to the heart. Torien’s counter-only omakase experience ($150) is mesmerizing; there are only 20 vied-after seats, so set a Notify, pronto.

As Stephen Starr’s latest opening — in Gramercy’s highly-anticipated Fotografiska museum no less — Verōnika is suitably grandiose. The vibe is inspired by grand, turn-of-the-century, European cafes, with soaring ceilings and plush seats. On the menu are the cold-weather plates to match: borscht, lamb goulash, and wisps of lavish Eastern European dining. On the walls is striking photography from the world’s top female talent.

We’d trust the guys behind Chez Ma Tante with anything — especially a brasserie. Enter Le Crocodile, Brooklyn’s answer to the mighty French genre, where chefs Jake Leiber and Aidan O’Neal plunge into œufs mayo; steak au poivre; and perfectly crisp, golden frites. Round out the saucy offerings with something from the gin-and-tonic program, and don’t leave without ordering the chocolate-drenched profiteroles.

If Her Name is Han, Atoboy and Atomix can tell you anything, it’s that JUA has the makings of a hit. Dreamt up by Jungsik’s former executive chef, this Hand Hospitality venture isn’t afraid of the heat: Chef Ho Young Kim tames a spectacular wood-fired grill in service of his six-course tasting that puts classic Korean dishes with a New York edge in the spotlight.

1 diner. 75 items on the menu. 24 hours a day. Welcome to Soho Diner, a modern-day tribute to an endangered species, complete with vinyl booths and formica tables. But there’s also notable flair in the air, from the décor to the menu, which keeps a parade of spruced-up eggs, pancakes, and sandwiches whizzing in and out of the dining room. If you’ve got 50 cents in your pocket, head to the jukebox — it’s alive and well.

A new infusion of soul has edged its way into Harlem. After a two-year renovation, Chaiwali has returned. With the ever-gracious Anita Trehan (the owner, chef, and host) at the helm, it’s gracing the neighborhood with a menu that has one foot in New Delhi and the other in New York. The butter chicken may be among the best takes the city has ever known, and the cup of chai may effectively ruin you for all others.

What happens when an acclaimed Denver restaurateur brings the Southwest with her? New York gets The Banty Rooster. The minimalist space deals not-so-familiar plates to the New York palate, from roasted delicata squash topped with brown butter sauce and pepitas, to albondigas dipped in a mixture of mojo verde and confit egg yolk.

Carroll Gardens has welcomed another buzzy neighborhood haunt: Bar Bête, a French-Canadian stalwart helmed by a small army of Breslin vets. The kitchen is led by Marc St. Jacques, a Canadian trailblazer who laces crab omelette with seaweed butter and peppers black truffle mushroom toast with aged soy. Wine is the drink of choice here; the list favors natty pours.

There are pockets of Mykonos in the city, where whitewashed walls with windows painted in Greece’s signature blue are ready to whisk you off to the Aegean Sea. Souvlaki GR boasts three New York locations (LES, Midtown West and East), so you have no excuse to miss the beautifully charred kalamakia (Greek skewers) and pillowy pitas that made the original food truck famous.

People-watchers, right this way: Felix is a SoHo bistro with quite a view. Smack on the corner of West Broadway and Grand Street, this chic haven boasts floor-to-ceiling windows, so you can gaze upon the Big Apple while eating moules frites and croque monsieur. 

A joint can’t possibly be known for its Detroit-style pies and its burgers… Unless it’s Emmy Squared and it, almost nonchalantly, aces both. The Upper East Side locale proffers the same saucy pizzas with crackly, cheesy edges and pretzel-bunned burgers as its other outposts, but with Uptown extras as well — waffle fries topped with truffle cream and truffle sausage, anyone?

At this Dumbo newcomer, expect Brooklyn and Manhattan bridge views, and a menu that dives into the world of comfort food, from chicken pot pie to lamb ragu on housemade pappardelle.

Mario Carbone’s most casual concept is a love letter to New York’s Italian American state of mind. We’re talking crackly chicken and saucy meatball parm heroes, mozz sticks bursting with melted cheese, light and airy fried calamari, and garlic bread doused in parsley butter. Throw in Parm’s retro-kitsch décor (tiled checkerboard floors and red vinyl booths), to complete the nostalgic return to a more red-sauce time.

Le Rivage has been a Restaurant Row stalwart for 30 years, and you can thank three generations of the Denamiel family for that. The elegant French restaurant is a destination for its pre-theater prix fixe ($45), where Gallic fare (coq au vin) brushes up against not-so-traditional plates (French onion soup burger). Consider a culinary trip across the Atlantic next time you’re in for a show.
